Anthony Imperiale was the only Indepedent to win a State Senate race in New Jersey history. A former Newark City Councilman, he was elected to the Assembly in 1971 and to the Senate in 1973. In 1974, he ran for Mayor of Newark and lost a runoff to incumbent Kenneth Gibson. He lost his Senate seat in 1977 to Democrat Frank Rodgers. He won an Assembly seat as a Republican in 1979 and lost the GOP primary for Governor in 1981.

"He’s obviously working very, very hard at it. I mean he’s traveling all over the country as chairman of the [Republican Governors Association] and I think at this point he has as good a chance or better than anybody else. His name is household word all across the country, and I think he would make a great president."
