GOVERNOR CORZINE RECEIVES HUMANITARIAN AWARD FOR DARFUR EFFORTS FROM STUDENT GROUP

HADDONFIELD – Students from the Haddonfield Memorial High School chapter of Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND) today presented Governor Jon S. Corzine with the HMHS Humanitarian Award. The award is given annually to an individual who has shown strong leadership and support toward ending the genocide in Darfur.

“I am truly humbled and want to express my sincere appreciation for this high honor regarding an issue that has long been of utmost importance to me,” said Governor Corzine in accepting the award. “Raising awareness and prompting action regarding the atrocities committed in the Darfur region remains among my proudest accomplishments as a member of the United States Senate.”

The Governor also congratulated STAND members for their efforts to raise $3,000 to purchase 100 solar cookers for Darfur refugees. Solar cookers enable refugees to cook food without the need for frequent firewood collection. This reduces the risk of attack by Janjaweed militia, decreasing the amount of violence committed against women and girls. It is estimated that two solar cookers can save one ton of wood each year.

Governor Corzine presented the group with an official proclamation commending the organization “for taking on the enormous moral responsibility to act in the name of our common humanity and not stand idly by.”

The student group is committed to raising awareness of the genocide in the Darfur Region in Sudan and encourages greater activism in the Haddonfield Community.

“Most of all, I want to congratulate the members of Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND) for recognizing that injustices committed against our fellow man is an injustice committed against each and every one of us,” added the Governor.

"It’s not a political environment that’s particularly warm for incumbents, but it looks like Booker has little to be worried about as the campaign season draws to a close."
