Gill Campaign on Fulop’s endorsement of Payne: ‘sleazy’

News of Downtown Jersey City Councilman Steve Fulop’s endorsement of Donald Payne Jr. for Congress disgusted the Nia Gill camp this afternoon.

“This is an astonshingly sleazy quid pro quo between Essex County and Downtown Jersey City to try to stop African American women from having a voice,” said Pat Politano, spokesman for state Sen. Nia Gill, (D-34), Montclair.

Payne today collected Fulop’s 2012 endorsement in the 10th Congressional District Democratic Primary in exchange for Payne’s support for Fulop’s 2013 mayoral run.

Gill, who has the support of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO), also has the backing of state Sen. Sandra Cunningham, (D-31), Jersey City.

Cunningham is expected to run for mayor in 2013.

“They’re trying to stop the two of them – two women from advancing politically,” Politano said of the mens’ co-endorsement.

"The governor still has to come to bat."
