Bergen Democrats feeling optimistic

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS – Cheers and applause rang out at the Bergen County Democrats’ Election Day headquarters a moment ago as the party’s county chairman declared things are “looking good.”

Lou Stellato, chairman of the Democratic Committee of Bergen County, just took to the floor to announce Democrats have pulled ahead in the race for two county freehold seats in Dumont, Paramus, North Arlington and Demarest.

“The Democrats have won in Hillsdale for the first time in a long time,” Stellato declared on the floor of the Hasbrouck Heights Hilton.

“This looks very good,” he said, receiving cheers from the two hundred or so who are gathered inside the hall.

Stellato said the race for Democratic hopefuls Steve Tannelli and Tracy Zur are not certain and that officials are still waiting for a number of precincts to return ballots, but added the returns they have received so far point things in the right direction for Democrats to take back control of the Board of Freeholders here in the state’s largest county.

“I know that every minute seems like an hour,” he said. “I will be back with new results.”

"This meeting is entirely off the record. Until somebody leaks it."
