Former attorney for Bergen County Dems sentenced to three years probation

TRENTON – A federal court judge sentenced a former attorney for Bergen County Democrats to three years of probation for his role in a mail fraud scheme and for failure to file federal income tax returns.

Dennis Oury, the former attorney to the northern Democratic Party and borough attorney for Bergenfield, avoided time behind bars after he pleaded guilty in 2009 to one count of conspiring to commit mail fraud and one count of failing to file federal income tax returns.

Oury was sentenced today in Newark, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

He was indicted in 2008 alongside his business partner and the former Bergen County Democratic chairman, Joseph Ferriero, on several counts of conspiracy and mail fraud charges.

In addition to the sentence of probation, Oury was fined $17,500.
