The Federal Republic of New Jersey?

It seems that some in our great state are truly unhappy with the course of events last Tuesday and are looking to start their own country.

To date, 9,731 people have signed an online petition demanding that New Jersey be allowed to withdraw from the United States and “create its own new government.”

The request, filed on Saturday by “Joe R.” of Sewell, appears on petitions.whithouse.gov the White House’s online home for “We the People” petitions.

According to the guidelines of the site, a petition needs 25,000 signatures within 30 days.  If it reaches that threshold, “White House staff will review it, ensure it’s sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.”

Petitions appear for 30 states and so far two, Texas with more than 71,000 signatures and Louisiana with 28,455, have garnered enough support to warrant a response from the White House.  Florida is not far behind with more than 21,000 signatures.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry reportedly wants no part of the petition, saying in a statement that he believes in the “greatness of our union.”

No word on whether Gov. Chris Christie is ready to become President of the Republic of New Jersey.

"Since the print publication of this list, Christie, in his capacity as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, helped decisively turn the midterm elections in the Republicans' favor, which makes him a bit more influential than we initially gave him credit for, post-Bridgegate. So when your state governments do absolutely nothing for you for the next four years, be sure to thank him!"
