Assemblyman Sean Connors’s (D-33) decision to pull the ripcord on Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO)-backed incumbent Jersey City Mayor Jerry Healy revealed an organization in chaos.
With state Sen. Brian P. Stack (D-33) already defined in opposition to the HCDO and state Sen. Nick Sacco (D-32) entrenched in the organization, inquiring minds turned to the county’s third power legislator: state Sen. Sandy Cunningham (D-31).
Cunningham two weeks ago told PolitickerNJ.com she hasn’t ruled out a run for mayor, but if she runs for re-election to the Senate, there is a strong likelihood she will end up on the Stack – and not Sacco – side of the equation.
That would make Sacco the only HCDO-backed incumbent.
Confident of good relations with both Stack and Cunningham as he heads toward re-election, Gov. Chris Christie has regularly disparaged Sacco as the poster boy for everything wrong with Democratic Party power politics.
That looked like a good strategy until the FBI showed up at Stack’s City Hall last week.
