Lesniak: ‘I’m running again’

Veteran state Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-20) is running for re-election, he tells PolitickerNJ.com.

Lesniak had a tough Democratic Primary fight in 2011, but defeated Elizabeth Board of Education-backed challenger Jerome Dunn.

“Since then, I’m stronger and they’re weaker,” the senator said of the EBOE, target of an AG’s investigation that resulted in the indictment of the school board president.

Lesniak had hoped that his friend and ally, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, would run for governor, but said he is determined to run again even with Booker not heading the ticket.

Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage has not made any announcement regarding his own examination of a gubernatorial bid, and Lesniak running mate Assemblyman Joe Cryan (D-20) is also in a holding pattern.

"It’s not a political environment that’s particularly warm for incumbents, but it looks like Booker has little to be worried about as the campaign season draws to a close."
