Newark City Council, Booker, reaffirm Speight for at-large seat

The result at this afternoon’s Newark City Council meeting was the same as it was last week, as Mayor Cory Booker broke a deadlocked council and affirmed Shanique Davis Speight as a replacement for U.S. Rep. Donald Payne (D-10).

Council people Anibal Ramos, Luis Quintana, Carlos Gonzalez and Augusto Amador all voted for Speight, and the mayor propelled her over the objection of Council people Ronald C. RIce, Mildred Crump, Darrin Sharif, and Ras Baraka.

"It’s not a political environment that’s particularly warm for incumbents, but it looks like Booker has little to be worried about as the campaign season draws to a close."
