Sweeney met with DGA’s O’Malley on gov. run

Want a clue as to whether Senate President Steve Sweeney’s gubernatorial machinations are real or not?

In October, Sweeney travelled to Baltimore for a meeting with Democratic Governor’s Association Chairman Gov. Martin O’Malley of Maryland.   According to a source familiar with the meeting, the two men had a long, frank discussion about the New Jersey governor’s race and the potential to unseat Gov. Chris Christie.

While O’Malley reportedly made no specific commitment to Sweeney, the meeting was well received by both men.  The DGA had reportedly been committed to Newark Mayor Cory Booker as the party’s best chance to dethrone Christie, however, in August a source connected to the organization said the DGA was not solely focused on Booker and was open to other potential candidates.

Sweeney has said he will make no announcement of his future plans until 2013.
