Atlantic County Sheriff Frank Balles is poised to announce his challenge of state Sen. Jim Whelan (D-2).
“It’s definitely a serious consideration and we’ll be making a decision in the next two weeks,” the sheriff told PolitickerNJ.com.
Atlantic County GOP Chairman Keith Davis said Balles’s work ethic helped propel him to victory in 2008, a bad year for Republicans. The chairman is convinced Gov. Chris Christie’s presence on the GOP ticket with Balles presents a tough obstacle for Whelan, who handily won his 2011 re-election.
“Pennsylvania has exceeded Atlantic City as a gaming market,” Davis said. “What has Sen. Whelan done in order to position us as a tourist destination? It took a Republican from Morris County to help Atlantic City move ahead.”
Davis said both incumbent GOP assemblymen John Amodeo and Chris Brown have told him they’re running again.
