Burzichelli, Wagner & Caputo Legislation To Benefit Standardbred Horse Racing Industry Advances

(Trenton) Legislation sponsored by Assembly Democrats John J. Burzichelli, Connie Wagner, and Ralph R. Caputo to ensure that standardbred horse racing will continue, expand and thrive in New Jersey was approved today by the Assembly.

“With the right funds in place and the right organizations working together, New Jersey’s standardbred industry has unlimited potential,” said Burzichelli (D-Cumberland, Gloucester, Salem). “This is a small action that would provide one of New Jersey’s most valued industries the legislative backing they need to continue doing what they do best.”

“Our support of the standardbred racing today means a stronger industry tomorrow,” said Wagner (D-Bergen, Passaic). “The members of the horse racing industry work hard for the sport and deserve every opportunity to excel in the state and nationally. These legislative actions help them do so. “

“From horse breeders to trainers to riders, this industry employs many New Jerseyans in many different fields,” said Caputo (D-Essex). “This allows the workers who have dedicated themselves to horse racing to maintain their jobs, provide for families and contribute to New Jersey’s economy.”

The bill (A-3489) would allow funds statutorily dedicated to standardbred horse racing purses to be used for benefit of standardbred horse racing and breeding industry. Also, the bill allows permitholder and Standardbred Breeders Association to work together to agree on use of monies.

The measure was approved 74-0; and it now goes to the Senate for further consideration.

"He’s obviously working very, very hard at it. I mean he’s traveling all over the country as chairman of the [Republican Governors Association] and I think at this point he has as good a chance or better than anybody else. His name is household word all across the country, and I think he would make a great president."
