Calling all party chairs: Dems State Party Chair Wiz reaches out to party leaders on guv 2013

Democratic State Party Chairman John Wisniewski wants input from county party leaders regarding the 2013 gubernatorial election, according to party sources.

Wisniewski is convening a conference call later this afternoon with chairs invited from all of the state’s 21 counties to consider options.

So far, only state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-18) is a declared candidate among elected party officials.

Some party members continue to kick the tires of former Gov. Dick Codey, state Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) and U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-9).

Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-6) is not in the mix at this time. Wisniewksi last month announced his own decision not to pursue a run for governor, followed by an announcement by Newark Mayor Cory Booker before Christmas.

Sources tell PolitickerNJ.com that some chairs – including those inclined to back Buono – are frustrated with the mulling periods afforded Booker in addition to some as-yet undeclared candidates.

Several intend to push for firm deadlines from those who have not yet said whether they are in or out.

Wisniewski’s effort to nail down a party gubernatorial strategy presents a two-pronged statewide scouring by a party up against the considerable presence of GOP Gov. Chris Christie.

Sweeney is himself personally making the rounds, as first reported by PolitickerNJ.com.

The Senate President personally reached out to Pascrell to gauge the elder statesman’s interest and intent and later did the same with Codey.
