WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today announced that he will serve as Chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government in the 113th Congress. The Subcommittee oversees annual funding for a diverse swath of federal agencies and programs, including the Securities & Exchange Commission, the Department of the Treasury, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Federal Trade Commission, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Executive Office of the President, Federal court system and many other Federal agencies and regulatory commissions. A complete list of the subcommittee jurisdiction can be found here. “The financial services industry is critical to the economy in New Jersey and the entire nation, and its proper regulation is essential to ensure Main Street—not just Wall Street—prospers,” Lautenberg said. “This chairmanship provides an important opportunity to strengthen consumer protections and make sure our nation’s financial institutions serve the interests of all Americans. In addition, the FCC has a tremendous impact on our daily lives, from cell phones to the Internet to what we see on our television screens, and I will work to promote fairness, localism, and diversity in the telecommunications industry. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is an important agency that regulates more than 15,000 products, and I will make sure that it continues to do its best to keep our families safe from hazards such as toxic chemicals and unsafe toys. The Small Business Administration is playing a critical role in providing disaster relief following Superstorm Sandy, and I will make sure these funds are available to New Jersey families and businesses. All of the agencies under this jurisdiction are vital to the functioning of our society and I will do my best to make sure they have the resources necessary to serve the people of New Jersey and the nation.” In the 113th Congress, Senator Lautenberg will serve on the Senate Appropriations, Commerce, and Environment and Public Works Committees. In addition to his chairmanship on the Appropriations Committee, Lautenberg will continue to serve as Chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety and Security. ###
