Lesniak throws support behind Codey

State Sen. Ray Lesniak today threw his support behind former Gov. Dick Codey as the Democrats’ best hope to win the governor’s race in November.

In a Facebook post Sunday, Lesniak called Codey the Democrats’ “Obi Wan Kenobi,” adding that the former governor has style to match that of incumbent Republican Gov. Chris Christie.

“Codey for Governor? Christie’s style has vaulted his popularity, but Codey has style, also. Christie’s feisty style has overshadowed his support for Romney and his policies that would cut taxes on the wealthy while putting added burdens on everyone else,” Lesniak wrote. “Honk if you like Codey for Governor. Now that Cory Booker has chosen not to run, Codey is our Obi Wan Kenobi.”

Codey has not yet announced whether he will challenge Christie in November, but the state Senator from Essex County has said repeatedly he is mulling his options.

Last week, Senate President Steve Sweeney reportedly met with Codey to discuss a potential candidacy. To date, only state Sen. Barbara Buono has declared her candidacy for governor.

"He’s obviously working very, very hard at it. I mean he’s traveling all over the country as chairman of the [Republican Governors Association] and I think at this point he has as good a chance or better than anybody else. His name is household word all across the country, and I think he would make a great president."
