Sources: Codey will not run for governor

State Sen. Dick Codey will not run for governor, sources said.

Two sources with knowledge of former Gov. Dick Codey’s intentions told PolitickerNJ the Essex County senator will not run for governor. Codey began informing high-ranking Democrats this morning.

Earlier this week Codey met with national labor leaders in Washington, D.C., and returned from the meeting with assurances that labor would back him if he chose to run.

Codey’s decision leaves Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono as the only declared candidate.

Senate President Steve Sweeney also is mulling a bid and his decision is imminent.

"He’s obviously working very, very hard at it. I mean he’s traveling all over the country as chairman of the [Republican Governors Association] and I think at this point he has as good a chance or better than anybody else. His name is household word all across the country, and I think he would make a great president."
