Buono campaign issues call for donors

TRENTON – The Buono gubernatorial campaign is sounding an alarm for potential donors as an important reporting deadline nears.

Reminding supporters that “all gifts are being matched 2-1,” the campaign says in an email from manager Jonathan Ducote that “There never has been a more critical time to give.”

May 6, next Monday, is the reporting deadline for the campaign.

In four months, Sen. Barbara Buono has yet to crack $700,000 raised.  She has been awarded $890,000 from the state matching funds program, which gives her $2 for every $1 raised and as of her last submission she was $1.3 million shy of the $2 million needed to secure the maximum state match.

According to state records, should she secure the Democratic nomination in June and not raise the remaining $1.3 million – two likely scenarios –  she would be the first major party nominee not to hit the mark.

In addition, Buono continues to trail Gov. Chris Christie by substantial margins, and even some key Democratic leaders have shown lukewarm support.

Ducote’s plea for fundraising says the Buono campaign can succeed, but “not without urgent resources to get our message across.”

"This meeting is entirely off the record. Until somebody leaks it."
