Progressive advocacy group One NJ has dropped another $500,000 on cable air time, bringing its total purchase up to over $1 million, according to a source tracking media buys.
The group is set to feature a second commercial that will run concurrently with the first one unveiled two weeks ago that attacked Gov. Chris Christie’s economic record. According to a source familiar with the buy, the new commercial will highlight Christie’s priorities and how they stack up against public opinion.
One NJ is a 501 (c) (4) organization and is prohibited from working directly with a candidate. The organization is not required to disclose its funding, a source of controversy during Christie’s first term in office.
In 2010, a group of GOP luminaries founded Reform Jersey Now as a way to bolster the governor’s effort to cap property tax increases. Democrats squawked over the group’s agenda and demanded the release of its donor list. In December of that year, the group disclosed donations of more than $600,000.
In 2011, a second Republican group, known as Center for a Better New Jersey, helped fund the GOP’s legislative redistricting effort. The group, run by Sen. Tom Kean Jr., never released its list of contributors. Democrats took issue with that organization as well, claiming that the redistricting process was being funded by Republican special interests.
