CD 3 names in the mix in a post-Runyan universe

Burlington County Freeholder Aimee Belgard, a Democrat, is set to announce her CD 3 candidacy.

But the news that CD3 Congressman Jon Runyan won’t run again has spurred talk of others examing a possible run.

On the Republican side those names include state Sen. Dawn Addiego (R-8) of Burlington and Senator Chris Connors (R-9) of Ocean.

State Sen. Diane Allen (R-7) is a gargantuan name in the district.

Former Burlinton County Freeholder Aubrey Fenton is in the mix.

This is an Ocean County/Burlington County split district and the GOP wants to try to avoid what happened in 2008, when Chris Myers and Jack Kelly engaged in one of the bloodiest GOP primaries in South Jersey.

Since Burlington got Runyan, it is possible, sources say, that Ocean will get a chance to put up a candidate who clears the GOP field the way Runyan did in 2010.

On the Democratic side, Assemblymen Herb Conaway and Troy Singleton are in position as options if Belgard does not coalesce establishment Democratic Party support.

"He’s obviously working very, very hard at it. I mean he’s traveling all over the country as chairman of the [Republican Governors Association] and I think at this point he has as good a chance or better than anybody else. His name is household word all across the country, and I think he would make a great president."
