Abate will enter race vs. Garrett

Democrat Camille Abate will announce next month that she will enter the race to challenge GOP Rep. Scott Garrett in 2008.  The Glen Rock attorney ran for Congress last year, and won 34% in her primary challenge to the organization candidate, Paul Stuart Aronsohn – despite her late entrance and being significantly outspent.

"We're going to do it right this time,” said Abate, a progressive activist who entered the contest only after Dorothea Anne Wolfe dropped out.

Aronsohn, a former aide to Gov. James E. McGreevey, received 44% of the vote against Garrett in the general election.  He is mulling an ’08 rematch.

“Anne’s withdrawal left a very moderate Democrat as the only alternative,” Ms. Abate said.   “I am convinced that we need a strong voice in Washington to speak out against the war in Iraq and the assault on civil liberties by the Bush Administration and to fight for working and middle class people who have been shouldering enormous burdens as a result of Bush's misguided policies and a complicit Congress.  This time I intend to win the Democratic nomination and unseat Scott Garrett in the general election."

Dear Scott, Here's Another Term

If we let Camille Abate be the nominee, then we are welcoming Scott Garrett to another term.

Scott don't let your guard down this is just a ploy a summer wind distraction.

It is not about doing it right this time, it is about your ideology being repulsive to the constituents in District 5. Become an American first then consider running.

That's a nice way of saying she's a liberal whacko.... Liberal nut. Can't win. Bring back the Rotarian....

Who Wins With Garrett?

Not most voters. Garrett is a circle-the-wagons, protect-your-own extremist. Won't spend a dime unless it helps him. Gives gov't money to organizations for the headline, then cuts their legs out from under them. Teach intelligent design in the schools? Aren't we already far enough behind in education? How come his property taxes are so much lower than yours and mine?

Evolution, a whacko librul idea.

Considering that the Republican mantra is to keep repeating over and over again that the universe cannot possibly be greater than 6000 years old, what more can we expect from Garrett? In fact, three of the ten Republican candidates for president do not "believe" in evolution at all (the fact that evolution has been proven time and time again by scientific testing notwithstanding--and before jumping all over me, it would behoove the naysayers to look up what the defintion of "evolution" actually is since it can be reverified in about 20 minutes' time if you choose your experimental system correctly). How utterly pathetic. I just reread Inherit the Wind and it is downright infuriating that things have not changed at all since 1925. Technology has advanced, but the mindset is basically the same. Can't explain how something happens, or don't understand the scientific explanation? Just say, "It's G-d's will." It works every time. After all, what can one say to that? The "It's G-d's will" argument is the biggest crutch ever, a way for the ignorant to defend their unwillingness to try to understand or to ask questions (kind of a combination of the Wicked Son and the Son Who Doesn't Know How to Ask of Four Questions fame). There is a difference between faith and stupidity, and Garrett and his ilk sadly fall clearly in the latter camp.

This aside, Garrett is truly a fossil of the Mussolini era. The man is a sniveling, craven reactionary lunatic who opposes any form of scientific, economic, or social progress. I love the way he purports to uphold principles of "small government," when in reality when the time comes to act he does anything but. I fail to understand how voting for FMA, actively denying access to birth control (H.R. 1298, H.R. 1950), prohibiting potentially life-saving ESC research, adamantly defending the Orwellian USA PATRIOT Act, implicitly promoting racism by shamelessly voting against renewing the Civil Rights Act (the only northeastern congresscritter to do so), and especially profligately shoveling money at the biggest foreign policy disaster and most egregious instance of governmental interventionism in modern history, the Iraq War, are in keeping with his professed philosophy of protecting individual rights for all Americans from governmental intrusion. Isn't it time that he practices what he preaches? As of now, it seems that the only people he feels to be "deserving" of their individual rights without governmental interference are straight, Christian, propertied white men. While Garrett pontificates from his sanctimonious pulpit, he is causing America to fall behind scientifically to NIEs in Asia. This will cost us not only economically and technologically, but will erode our prestige in the world even farther than it has already (if that is even possible anymore). He is truly a disgrace.

Who is this "WE" You Refer to?

I hate to break it to you, Anonymous, but rank and file Democrats will determine who the nominee is; not the established party elites.

Garrett, the bad penny.

I'll save the conservatives the trouble...Garrett is not going anyhwere (not that I don't want him to cry all the way back to Wantage). But so long as Sussex and Warren counties are still a part of New Jersey and are not ceded to Mississippi where they belong, Garrett is, tragically, going to be around for a while.

Dems Need A Winner

Issues aside, the Democrats need someone (anyone) who has won some sort of election to even think about competing against Garrett. You can easily spend 1000 hours to setup what you need to get 125,000 votes and if you've never done it before (Aronsohn, Abate, Wolfe, Sumers) you're dead before you even begin. The only thing the Democrats can do is to nominate someone qualified, put $250,000 in his or her campaign account by the beginning of spring '08, hope for a Republican backlash, and seriously lobby the local, state and federal Democratic & special interest groups to get on board. Without that perfect storm, it's going to be real tough.

05/30/07 9:54 pm

Dems please target the 5th CD.

I just love it!! The democrats are again wasting their money and effort in the 5th CD. Scott Garrett will once again win by huge margins.

05/31/07 12:26 am

he didnt win last time by toooo much

Although he did defeat Arohnson pretty solidly, he didn't win by that much. That being said Aronsohn would probably still fail a second time around, but a progressive activist will get murdered. Aronsohn would need to up his campaign and do a better job and he might have a possible shot, unfortunately that requires proving himself in sussex and warren, counties that love Garrett. As for Garrett, I'm someone who considers themselves to be somewhat conservative/moderate and he just seems to fail to even vote for things that make alot of sense that are non-partisan issues. I will never support him, that being said I don't think I could support Aronsohn who would just spout party rhetoric either. In other words, Mickey Mouse for Congress 08!

Hilarious

The pinkos hate Garrett almost as much as they hate Lonegan.

05/31/07 9:32 am

No, it's not Rank and File Democrats

Nick, you should be right, but we both know that County Committee Chairs and the Bergen Record are examples of elite forces influencing the choice of candidates.  Placement on the ballot and $ make a difference, since most voters don't know one candidate from another.  And the Bergen Record does its best to keep voters in the dark.  For the 2006 primary, the Record barely mentioned the primary and chose not to run or publish its usual survey of the Congressional candidates.  Usually, they submit questions to the candidates, then publish the candidates' responses.  Somehow, they decided this was not of interest or value to voters living in the 5th.

To make it worse, many institutions, including public libraries, are unwilling to host debates or display posters, "because we won't do anything political".  Unfortunately, they spend too much time reading common useage dictionaries and not enough time with proper useage.  They confuse "Political" with "Educational".  What these institutions mean to be saying is, "because we care more about avoiding conflict than about educating our citizens".

For the one millionth time...

Garrett is not getting beat in a general election.

Barring a scandal or Watergate-type year (and '06 obviously wasn't that), this district will not elect a Democrat to Congress. In its current form, the 5th District has voted for Bush twice, Forrester (!) twice, Schundler, Dole, et al. Get the picture???

Yes, the Bergen portion of the district is competitive and has trended Dem, BUT... Garrett still wins there. He would have to lose by at least six to 10 points before he has problems given the rock-solid conservative nature of the rest of the district.

The DCCC will not target this district. They will not waste their money. The next shot at Garrett will be after the 2010 Census and reapportionment, when New Jersey likely loses a House seat.

How Garrett Loses

I understand all the valid savvy points made by the "smart money" folks here. Based on past patterns, it doesn't take a genius to extrapolate trajectory to a probable future. What I'm suggesting is to add a new factor; a dynamic, creative and vital Democratic nominee.

Whoever the eventual Democratic nominee is; that person will have to light a fire in the hearts and souls of ALL Democrats in the 5th district.

That means bringing "fresh blood" into the party in the form of thousands of new registered voters.

It means, in effect, a kind of crusade against the un-American, un-Patriotic and un-Christian ideology and voting record that Mr Garrett does his best to cover up every two years as he plays his con game pretending to be something other than a radical right wing extremist fundamentalist.

I would, frankly, LIKE to see a well contested Democratic Primary...that means lots of constructive civil debates. Let there be five strong candidates! Or even more! Let's see who can be most articulate and powerful in their critique of the Garrett "record"/"mentality".

Let there be positive enLIGHTening drama!!!

The more light shed on Mr Garrett, the uglier (in a political sense of course ;-) he looks.

Further, I would love to see the a kind of statewide Democratic Unity vis a vis running against incumbent Republicans in Congress. The themes are similar. Why not make getting rid of Bush's policies by making the whole of the NJ delegation BLUE...a priority. I'm impressed with Tom Wyka; and would love to see him providing some leadership in that regard.

Frankly, anyone in Congress that supports Bush's Iraqi "course" deserves to be removed at the next election...and I don't care WHAT Party they are in!

Again; the way to beat Garrett is to rewrite the "book". The old style conventional politics won't cut it...the Democratic Party in NJ MUST become a thoroughly grass roots party.....and that means lots and lots and lots of primaries in the future......and it means the death of "pay to play" as a way of "life".

My loyalty is to common sense and to common human decency. Period.

06/01/07 11:24 pm

Nick...

The platitudes about adding "thousands of new registered voters" are lovely but it doesn't address the facts on the ground.

The 5th District, drawn by Democrat and Republican power brokers, is designed to elect a Republican... and a conservative one at that. Scott Garrett ran twice before getting the nomination, almost defeating the former incumbent. He represents the policy perspectives of the majority of those who voted in the district. The problem you have is you don't like the results.

As for "statewide Democratic Unity," your party controls most of the state and is in effect the institutional majority party, mainly because the Republicans have ceded that status. Pay to play will never go away as long as Democrats (and to a lesser extent -- by virtue of their lack of power -- Republicans) benefit.

You are an idealist. In New Jersey politics, idealism is suffocated in the cradle.

06/01/07 11:39 pm

"Cession"?

The Republicans "ceded" that status by consistently and, by now, predictably losing statewide elections, which in turn is due to an evolution of the ideological tilt of the state since the 1980s. There was nothing deliberate about it.

06/01/07 11:43 pm

They gave it back

The Republicans "ceded" that status by betraying the constituencies that elected them in the early 1990s.

To borrow a quote from John Fund of the Wall Street Journal, New Jersey Republicans used the "swamp" (state government) as a hot tub instead of draining it. Once they established themselves as the identical side of a rotten coin, they ceded their mandate.

06/01/07 11:50 pm

Dont know about all of that..

But Garrett is a horrible representative and has no power in Congress anymore. Scott Garrett makes Chris Smith look like a Moderate.(And I actually like Smith) Seriously, he probably will get re-elected somewhat easily, but I still will refuse to vote for him and his horrifying voting record.

06/02/07 12:37 am

Right you are.

I am represented by Chris Smith, and as much as I dislike his dogmatic "culture of life" hypocrisy he doesn't hold a candle to the odiousness of Scott Garrett. I will grudgingly admit that in many instances (e.g. most fiscal issues) Smith does a relatively decent job of representing our district--though his ultra-conservative social stances are another issue.

And Arnie, essentially we are in agreement: the Republicans are no longer in power because they are no longer capable of winning statewide elections; they have become so unelectable to the state's progressive population. Perhaps if they moved back toward the politics of, say, Christie Whitman or Millicent Fenwick they might be more dangerous. At this point, though, ostentatious battles royales over who is the "most" conservative is offputting to voters outside of the more sparsely populated Republican counties. Besides, our state is so solidly Democratic at the presidential level that it doesn't bode well for Republicans downticket. We are a blue state, and we are going to stay that way so long as there is no massive influx of immigrants from Alberta.

06/02/07 10:29 am

Camille Abate.

Camille Abate will destroy any chance of Democrats winning the seat should she be the nominee. She is NJ's version of Cindy Sheehan, a screaming, squealing, hysterical liberal without a shred of qualification to serve in the House. Why can't Democrats run a credible and legitimate candidate for Congress? Someone who has actually been elected to public office with a record of accomplishment? Camille Abate is just another old hippie who doesn't know how to win. She's a liberal first and not a Democrat and that's her problem.

08/16/07 1:01 pm

Maybe.......

Don't underestimate the value of the Party line AND running next down the ballot just below Hillary and Richardson.

If we can just ashpett for a minute and realize that the terrorists also saw that program on 60 minutes with the beauty of living in The Kurdish paradise of Iraq. AND the next thing you know, 500 Kurds were killed by suicide bombers. Please see the relativity: We are dealing with intelligent, well financed and devoted criminals. AND they are also right next to you, pumping gas in any county. I think projecting the general election will cause one to accept that: The surge didn't work, The Iraqi leadership will have been totally  changed and the request EVEN then will be "for more time to let the Iraqis take control".....Helllooo??? I believe that the war will be the vital issue at that time and whoever is on Hillary's column will be voted in. I think the Republicans have pretty much used all the dirt that they can throw against her already and will  have to resort to Whitewater, Billly Jeff's infidelity - (but how does that play into Rudy's statement of "leave my family alone") and Hillary's cleaveage. That's all they have!

Bottom line: It's gonna be Hillary, Richardson and Aronsohn. AND they are going to win!

Imagine:

Jerry Falwell types endorseing A Catholic hypocrite?? Twice divorced - 1 of which was incestual?? dressed in drag?? promoter of abortion, gay rights and gun control Italian American????

Me myself, I can't wait to see the Democratic versions of "The swift Boat" commercials with Rudy in drag, in bed with his cousin, meeting his "other woman" with ashes still on his forehead etc.

THIS IS THE DEMOCRATS" ELECTION TO LOSE!!!

<then again - maybe not>
