Against Sabrin attack, Pennacchio defends his 1991 manifesto

WOODBRIDGE - On the same day Murray Sabrin denounced as "fascist" a work written seventeen years ago by state Sen. Joseph Pennacchio (R-Morris), the two Republican candidates for U.S. Senate intensified their debate at a forum sponsored by the Woodbridge Township Republican Organization.

Sabrin, an economics and finance professor at Ramapo College, last night stood by his characterization of Pennacchio's self-published work, The Nationalist Agenda, a Blueprint for the 21st Century, as a "fascist manifesto" and reiterated his demand that Pennacchio drop out of the race.

"Calling for the government to put people in camps is un-American and nothing that Americans should be advocating," said Sabrin, referring to ideas in a chapter from Pennacchio's book titled "Solving the Homeless Problem." "To single out a group of people for being placed in a government military camp is unacceptable and repugnant policy."

Sabrin likened the idea to the U.S. government holding Japanese Americans in internment camps during WW II.

Firing back prior to the debate, Pennacchio labeled Sabrin's comments about his 94-page work as the desperate and hateful words of a fringe candidate.

Pennacchio, the front-runner after tangling with Sabrin and former U.S. Senate candidate Anne Evans Estabrook in nearly half a dozen county contests, said he wrote about housing homeless people in abandoned military bases in the years following the end of the Cold War when the government anticipated base closings.

"We're talking about putting roofs over people's heads, giving them housing, blankets, food," said Pennacchio, a dentist and first term state senator. "Nobody's saying you should be forced to go. How do you draw a nexus between that and concentration camps? How dare he. How dare he. Shame on him."

The passage in question from Pennacchio's The Nationalist Agenda, reads: "Why not put many existing domestic military bases to good use? These bases in many instances are self-contained miniature cities. Housing, grounds, military fire and police protection are all in place. Our national defense should not be limited to defense of foreign invaders. The enemy within, consisting of poverty and despair can be a far more immediate and destructive force. Taking these people and separating them into various military camps would be a first step in the mainstreaming of our homeless back into society."

Pennacchio said Sabrin's selection of the word "fascist" indicates his rival's ill-fitness to hold public office as a U.S. senator. "What happens when he disagrees with you?" Pennacchio asked. "He's going to call you names?"

Urging people to read the work in its entirety before they judge, Pennacchio said his positions on abortion and gun control and some other issues have evolved from the time he wrote The Nationalist Agenda - not an uncommon occurrence for a politician, he noted. U.S. Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee for president, changed his position on the issue of illegal immigration from what it was six months ago, said Pennacchio. Abraham Lincoln, he said, at first intended only to preserve the union, not free the slaves.

"Now imagine Murray Sabrin going to Washington, with such rigidity," said Pennacchio. "Shameful.

"This is about how we can help people, can you imagine the idea of trying to help people?" added Pennacchio, who would not discount the idea of housing homeless people in abandoned military facilities. "It's a feasible idea, not a fascist idea."

When they faced the small crowd and fielded seven questions from the Woodbridge GOP, Sabrin stood by his call from earlier in the day for Pennacchio to exit the contest.

"Regrettably, I called on my opponent to leave this race because of things he called for," said Sabrin. "I had to do that as a matter of conscience."

Jersey Joe Needs to Leave and Go Away

Joe, have you ever heard of a thing called karma? You know, what goes around comes around? After what he did to Tom Kean Jr. in '06, this is gratifying to see.

Better yet, perhaps Sen. Kean would like to take another crack at this?  That would be karma on top of karma!!

Jersey Joke is ... defending himself.

How desperate can you get? Your paper should defend itself, Jersey Joke, however, it is indefensible. Please, spare us this joke and just go away.

Go for it Murray!

Finally a race Republicans can sink their teeth into...Jersey Joe is out of his league. Sabrin is going to eat him up.

Murray is right

Jersey Joe is a joke. But that doesn't mean I'm supporting Murray. Unless the GOP gets a legitimate candidate - we lose....again.

Jersey Joe Needs to Quit

Jersey Joe and his alter ego "Joe Penn" need to step aside and let Murray Sabrin focus on beating Lautenberg in the upcoming election. He is only fostering more mudslinging and has already provided enough dirt to the Democrats so much so that they can bury him in it.

If you want Dr. Murray Sabrin to run so much, have him run as a member of the Libertarian party.

Defending Pennacchio (a little)

Not that I am in the business of defending Republicans, but I feel compelled to say that what I've read in the Manifesto is hardly offensive and in fact puts out a platform, a set of ideas, from which one can agree or disagree. Pennacchio comes across as much more moderate in the Manifesto than I originally thought; he calls for attention to global warming, says the AIDS crises must be dealt with, and speaks glowingly of the right of workers to organize.

By contrast, when I debate candidate merits with Republicans on this forum, I usually try to stick to the issues, policy positions, actual votes, and so forth. Most of this material can be found on Project Vote Smart and/or bill proceedings online (all need to be posted, by the way). But more and more, candidates won't even take a policy position, much less write a policy paper, and I find this incredibly problematic. Political discourse should be about the marketplace of ideas, one policy pitted against another.

I don't think that Pennacchio should be criticized for having the gall actually to take some positions and publish a manifesto, even if I disagree with some of his prescriptions for society; if there is something truly radical in there, I stand partially corrected but have yet to see it.

I have to agree with Martin here,

Joe was putting forth policy ideas, some good, some bad, and some laughable.  Sabrin is going off the deep end here calling for him to drop out and resign his Senate seat.  The debate between Joe and Murray should be about ideas and principles, not this mudslinging.  We need to be united as a party to have any chance of defeating Lautenberg and this certainly doesn't help.

Pennacchio can't win

Pennacchio can't win... he cannot get support from independants.  Murray Sabrin not only can, but already has gotten support from independants.  When will the rest of the New Jersey Republicans wake up?  It seems liks Sabrin is the answer and as far as the state's economic problems... Sabrin has far more expereince with the economy than Pennacchio.

Unions

Supporting unions may be a popular position with Democrats, but to win the GOP nomination you cannot write such things and stick by them. Pennacchio is doing himself a great disservice by sticking to this horrid document.

Great

I had hoped it wouldn't happen but apparently the Sabrin freaks are going to be as annoying as the Ronulans were in the presidential race.  Apparently because spamming websites worked so well with Paul, why not do the same for Sabrin?

03/18/08 3:54 pm

Jeremy, Sabrin might be able

Jeremy, Sabrin might be able to get support of independents (although that is questionable and I would like to see your polling or other information to show that), but he will not get support of Republicans because of his libertarian views when it comes to national intelligence actions and his defeat cut and run position on Iraq.

Interesting.

I love how all the Sabrin detractors try in vain to tie us up with Ron Paul. Yes, there are Ron Paul supporters within the Sabrin support camp, but not all of Ron Paul's supporters have come on board with Sabrin.

Also, Sabrin has supporters from previous times he has run for office, not to mention that when you talk to MOST conservative republicans, they agree with Sabrin more often than with Pennacchio.,

When was the last time any of you have walked a precinct and just talked with the constituents? I have, and do regularly.

Sounds like the Pennacchio support camp are worried that their campaign's ship has hit an iceburg, and its sinking. Maybe it will stop and go away by painting all of Murray's supporters as "Ronulans".

 HAHAHA, fat chance.

Your candidates campaign is finished. Its going to be interesting to see it go "Stern Up" before it sinks to the abyss of bad political campaigns. He'll be lucky if he still has a political career at all after the dust settles.

Why don't we go back further and look at what Joe Said in High School?  How ridiculous.

Sabrin was born in Germany, so can we say he comes from the Fatherland?

The bottom line on all of this nonsense is all 14 votes Sabrin will ever get in a general election are posting on this site.

as opposed to the 5

as opposed to the 5 Pennacchio supporters on this board who try daily to bail the water from the sinking ship..
