The Republican assault on Democrats over monetization continues, in what is becoming a frequent campaign theme.
Today, Seventh District Republican state Senator Diane Allen issued a press release attacking her district’s two Democratic Assemblyman, Herb Conaway and Jack Conners, for refusing to vote for an amendment to the state budget that would have stricken monetization language.
Conaway and Conners are being challenged by Nancy Whatley-Griffin, a lawyer from Willingboro, and former Philadelphia Flyers player Brian Propp
”Even when they were presented with an amendment that would remove the language preparing for the toll road to be offered up for sale, they turned their backs on their constituents,” said Allen.
The two Democrats declared their opposition to monetization yesterday, however, at a news conference with Allen’s Democratic Senate opponent, Rich Dennison.
But for Allen, their opposition was too little, too late.
“Now, as the public uproar builds, they are back peddling and want to declare their opposition to the ill advised scheme. They had the chance and blew it,” said Allen.
Michael Clarke, the campaign manager for Connors and Conaway, said that the two Democrats have come out in opposition to the sale of the state’s toll roads.
“Herb Conaway and Jack Conners are opposed to the sale or lease of state toll roads. Senator Allen had her chance to debate this issue, but she remained silent on it,” said Clarke.
Clarke added a recurring Democratic campaign theme: tying local Republicans to President Bush.
"(Allen) walks around the district pretending to be a Democrat, where outside the district she’s a George Bush Republican,” said Clarke.

Does anyone in the state besides Lesniak and Corzine like this?
Maybe they thought of it while frolicking in the bucolic fields of Elizabeth together??? But at least Ray L. fights for the Turnpike, while Union County's other Senator, Tom Kean, loves Route 1 the best. That means Ray gets back and forth faster.
Yes, Sen. Allen, That is a Target on Your Back
Out of every state senate race in N.J. this year, there is almost certainly no other district, whether with a Dem or Rep senator, who has a more disproportionate amount of the rival party in it as there are Democrats over Republicans in District 7 (29% to 16% Dem to Rep). The fluke that has been Sen. Allen’s reelection to this seat may very well end this year when Allen goes up against a capable, articulate challenger like Rich Dennison, who is well-liked and very active in the community.
Allen is attempting to distract from the issues by accusing Conaway and Connors, both of whom won by more than a 2-1 margin in their last Assembly election, of supporting Corzine’s asset monetization plan. Of course, one could perhaps accurately say that the attempt to connect Allen with Bush, even if she has been one of his biggest state supporters, is also a distraction; I must admit that I have written an article on just this issue, though: http://www.bluejersey.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=4952
Although I admire Allen for her work helping the homeless in the state, I lost a lot of respect for her when she refused to support the landmark human rights bill for civil unions in the state senate and when she acted as a Karl Rove-directed surrogate and attacked Menendez about a Spanish-language channel on behalf of Kean Jr. this past fall; she also unfortunately refused to support the embryonic stem cell research expansion bill in the senate. To say that she has been a leader in the state senate would be highly inaccurate.
Dennison...please
Allen will easily defeat Rich Dennison. Think about it...if Allen's seat was winnable why wouldn't Connors or Conaway run for it...for two people who won by a 2-1 margin two years ago to pass on the race doesn't say much to how "vulnerable" Diane really is...Allen defeats Dennison 56-44.
Dennison will win
I can't divulge my source, but the Republicans' own internal poll shows Dennison already within 5 points of Allen. This is why you're finally seeing Allen starting to scramble. You have no idea how well known and well liked he is around here. Connors and Conaway will win by 20 points which will help Dennison and Dennison will win this race in what will be the biggest upset this year and possibly the biggest upset in the past 20 years.
5 point lead on 6/28 = nada!
come back in four months with that number and you'll have my attention
Allen is a pretty liberal Republican...
which means she can hold a Democratic district. She also was on Philly TV. I think she also probably appeals to some Democratic women who split their tickets.
Allen was actually completely wrong and I can't believe...
...the Democrat's didn't attack her for not even know what she was talking about. This is a very sloppy mistake from the Senator. There was NEVER an amendment. Jennifer Beck was going to propose one to strike the wording from the budget but she screwed it up by not having it on top and not submitting it so it WAS NEVER VOTED ON! If Senator Allen is attacking others for not voting for this amendment, well neither did she because in the end it was NEVER AN AMENDMENT.
Just to tell you more about this guy
Dennison is a friend, but I must admit I've only spoken to him once since he announced his candidacy. I will tell you why I state that he is very, very, well known. (1) he was a quarterback on the '92 state championship football team. that is a thing of pride for us here in district 7. from what i hear, he was begged to be part of the florence team, but he chose holy cross. he had an amazingly strong arm and blinding speed. but, that all fell apart at some point (not sure when). i don't know if it was in college or in high school, but he blew his knee out somewhere along the way. no matter the explanation, he went on to play QB at UPENN. but, the knee took a guy who ran a 4.7 40-yard dash to well over 5.0. thus, his football options were over. he, however, went on and lost over 30 pounds to play on UPENN's lightweight football squad. i believe he didn't last long ther either, though, as his knee was shot completely. (2) his dad (has the same name; senior)--a great man, in my estimation and that of everyone i know around here--has probably buried a majority of people's folks from about a 20-mile radius. he's just a good man who my folks tell me came from nocame from nothing and who is the most decent man out there. (3) i don't believe Rich makes that much money at all. i have friends who i have i referred to Rich and they have told me, depending on the situatuon, that he charged them either nothing or a nominal fee. he is, truly, a good man. i don't know if the above will guarantee him victory in november, but he sure as hell has my vote and that of my family and friends.

Vote for the Strong Man?
I don't think someone wins an election based of their athleticism.
That wasn't my point. Read
That wasn't my point. Read my entire post. Please.
Thanks for telling us Ron
1. He was the QB at Holy Cross not Florence. The average kid on the riverfront went to public school.
2. The funeral home is good for name ID but does not beat being on tv before Dennison was walking.
3. Funeral homes are making a mint.
Allen wins 55-45
I just don't know why you
I just don't know why you hate this guy. Do you have a personal beef with him? Heck, I don't hate Diane. In fact, I applaud anyone who is willing to serve the public. Without a doubt, Diane and Rich could be making much more money in the private sector if they had that time to spend rather than spending it on, really, us. I'd like to see campaigns be more about issues and not personal attacks. In this race, frankly, I applaud both of these capable indivuals for their time and efforts to serving the public interest.
