Mildred Barry Hughes, a Democrat from Union County, was the first woman to win election to the New Jersey State Senate when she won in 1965. She previously served three terms in the State Assembly.: Rutgers University Libraries PhotoIt's a minor correction at best: speaking at a meeting of Women Advocating for Good Governmen (WAGG), a division of the Women's Political Caucus of New Jersey, State Senator Diane Allen she was the eighth woman in New Jersey history to be sworn in to the State Senate. "It still upsets me," Allen said. "Hundreds of years -- eight women."
But actually, Allen was the ninth woman to serve in the State Senate. She was preceeded by Mildred Barry Hughes (D-Union) in 1966, Jerry English (D-Union) in 1971, Wynona Lipman (D-Essex) in 1972, Anne Martindell (D-Mercer) and Alene Ammond (D-Camden) in 1974, Leanna Brown (R-Morris) and Catherine Costa (D-Burlington) in 1984, and Martha Bark (R-Burlington) in 1997. Allen and Shirley Turner (D-Mercer) took office in January 1998.
While Allen may want more women in the Senate, it doesn't seem like she's taken a major role in making that happen. Of the eight Republican women who ran for the State Senate in other districts in 2001 and 2003, Allen -- either personally and with her own campaign account -- did not make a campaign contribution to any of them. It will be interesting to see how actively Allen, who is favored to win re-election to a fourth term in her own district this year, campaigns -- and fundraises -- for the five Republican women running for State Senate in 2007: Shelley Lovett against Fred Madden; Jennifer Beck against Ellen Karcher; Linda Gaglione against Raymond Lesniak; Rose McConnell against Nicholas Scutari; and Clara Nibot against Loretta Weinberg.

Giving to Rose McConnell
is like tossing money into a garbage compactor. Not only does she have no chance in hell, she can't even talk about Scutari and corruption because she was a Somerset County Park Commissioner!
There's only one issue that could win for McConnell, and that's Christmas Tree subpoenas. It looks like Scutari has no problem with the investigation anymore and that McConnell has her own ethical -- or at least competency -- issues from her time as a Freeholder appointing Park Commissioners and then as a Commissioner herself.
That's Diane Allen for you
She is totally a hypocrite. I am so pleased that she will lose this year. She tries taking every opinion and using it to her advantage but she's a flat-out liar. Dennison wins this year because every week he tells the people who she really is. Diane Allen = what a fake!
This is a bit of a stretch....
Senator Allen is in an election where she may be vulnerable. I can't blame her for not donating...raising cash is hard for Republicans in NJ and the Dems tend to have an unlimited amount of resources.
Diane
Diane raised thousands of dollars for a woman in my area -
a fundraiser that really helped her. I can't say if Diane gave

Name of the candidate? Year? Et cetera. Just don't throw out points without proof. We're all too sophisticated,(well, with the exception of plenty) to accept such a point without further evidence. Wally knows his stuff and he doesn't write B.S.

Thank you for the laugh! Poor Ronald, he and his buddy Dennison still cannot fathom that he is known as a hack! As much as Dennison with Ronald is running around slamming Diane, the only things that anyone who has read anything about Dennison is that he wants to make sure everyone knows she is a R and that he is running against Bush! From the few people that I know who have actually took the time to meet Dennison, they were NOT impressed and they did feel he was like the little boy trying to fill some big shoes. Basically he is too "young and immature." Imagine that
