Allen: New Jersey Families Are Suffering From Tax Fatigue

Senator Diane Allen, R-7, issued the following statement in response to the latest Monmouth University New Jersey Monthly Poll that shows New Jersey income levels may be among the highest in the country, but most families say their earnings can’t keep up with the rising cost of living in the Garden State.

“The rising cost of living in New Jersey is a major problem for families no matter what their income level.  It’s an issue that is being ignored by the Trenton politicians who, during the past five years, have increased spending by 48 percent.  Where has that money come from?  Our pockets!  We’ve had to pay an extra $15 billion in higher taxes.

Many middle-income families simply can’t afford to stay and are leaving for places that are more affordable.  A recent U.S. census report showed that New Jersey is experiencing negative population growth.  This trend will continue unless the state stops spending more than it has.

I am once again asking Senate President Codey to post (SCR-15) for a vote. My legislation would cap future state spending and create a surplus revenue reserve fund dedicated to property tax relief.  It would bring truth in budgeting to Trenton, make every expenditure a line item and put an end to fiscal gimmicks like off-line appropriations.

New Jersey may be the richest state now, but this poll along with others reveals some alarming trends.  For the sake of our state and future generations we need to stop wasteful spending and work to create an economic climate where families can thrive."
