ALLEN: SAVE THE PALMYRA COVE NATURE CENTER

ALLEN: SAVE THE PALMYRA COVE NATURE CENTER

Senator Diane Allen, (R-7), issued the following statement to the Burlington County Bridge Commission after a ribbon cutting at the Palmyra Cove Nature Park today.

“Today we cut the ribbon to allow greater access to South Jersey’s largest outdoor science classroom, Palmyra Cove.  Environmental education has never been more important and Palmyra Cove is one of the best places to learn about nature and the environment.  Thousands upon thousands of children and their parents come here every year to experience the wonders of nature first-hand.

“ There is, however, a pall hanging over today’s opening because the Federal government is considering placing dredge material on some 70 acres in this magnificent center. Not only will important habitat be lost, but we will diminish the capacity for environmental education at the Cove.  We can’t allow this to happen, just as this wonderful new step has been taken.

“As you know, I’ve been working with Palmyra Cove’s leadership on this concern for some time, and it was my hope that this matter would be resolved by thoughtful negotiations. However, this does not appear to be the case.  I am asking people to join me in standing up to the Federal government on this issue.

“I am asking everyone to contact their two United States Senators, Senator Lautenberg and Senator Menendez, the Army Corp of Engineers in Philadelphia, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and tell them how important it is to act now to protect the established habitat at the Palmyra Cove.”
