State Sen. Diane Allen sounded a note of fiscal responsibility today, outlining a plan she said would encourage state government to “live within its means.”
Allen, along with Assembly running mates Brian Propp and Nancy Griffin, announced a three point plan to “make New Jersey more affordable.” The three said that, if elected, they would write legislation to cap state spending growth at the rate of inflation plus population growth, require all appropriations to be submitted as bills and “require recurring expenses to be funded by recurring revenues and not one-shot gimmicks.”
“New Jersey is unaffordable because state government has been maxing out its credit card and passing the bill on to our taxpayers. It’s time to stop. Working families have been abused enough,” said Allen. “Our taxpayers are not a bottomless ATM, and they shouldn’t be forced to endure watching legislators of any party run up their tab with more and more wasteful spending that ignores our priorities.”
Yesterday, Allen’s opponent, Richard Dennison, showed up at her legislative office to criticize her for voting to implement the Homestead Tax Rebate but voting against the budget that ultimately funded it. Allen responded that asset monetization language and unnecessary spending forced her to cast a no vote on what she considered a deeply flawed budget. Today’s reference to “one-shot gimmicks,” can be read as a criticism of tax rebates, which Gov. Corzine has not guaranteed for next year.
Reached for comment, Dennison dismissed the idea of Allen as a fiscal conservative.
"How ironic that after 12 years as a state legislator, Diane Allen has done nothing to cut spending and when I start holding news conferences in front of her office she
wants to masquerade as a fiscal conservative," said Dennison. “Put your money where your mouth is, Diane.”

Once again Dennison hasn't done his homework
Dennison does not know what he is talking about yet again. Senator Allen has never voted to increase taxes. As a matter of fact she has a bill that would limit spending increases to the rate of inflation. However the current politicans in Trenton have yet to post her bill. Perhaps because they would rather continue to spend and live beyond their means at the expense of the taypayers then provide real fiscal reform
Diane Allen is the epitome
Diane Allen is the epitome of a fake. She wants to be known as a moderate (even though as Martin points out, the only "non-Republican" type things she's supported is abortion rights and a higher min wage), she claims to be an independent voice, she says she's a fiscal conservative, and she's a hard-core Bush supporter. If any politician in this great state of ours is a complete fake, it's Diane Allen. Who wants that in a "leader"? What a joke! I don't know who this woman is. Go Rich D.!
Waaaa Waaaaa
Sounds Like Dennison got his hand slapped today! Her plan says it all, Dennison obvioulsy does not understand the whole monetization issue. Diane by 10%

A Pearl of Wisdom from Sen. Allen
There's a difference between calling a press conference or putting out a release about fiscal responsibility and leadership 12 years after one has been elected to public office versus actually doing something about while in office.
We all know that the state is in a a fiscal crises and should live within its means; that train left the station quite a long time ago, Sen. Allen (I actually agree with Republican Conscience on that point). What's next on Allen's agenda, a press conference on how the state should have stronger ethics for its politicians?
Of course, Allen, who doesn't seem to have any core principles to her political beliefs, which seemingly change with the wind and whether a Republican is in the governor's mansion, actually voted to support asset monetization before she came out against it: http://www.bluejersey.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=5325
Talk to All those
thousands of people Diane's office has helped and she herself. Dennison does not have a chance and unfortuantely all the yammering by dim wits like the above mentioned poster only further adds to the difference between being a classy person and a barking moonbat on orders from his benefactor. Allen's beliefs: Shifting in the Wind?
Just like Sen. Allen voted for asset monetization before she came out against it for political convenience, she supposedly supports environmental preservation while she also voted against a brownstone restoration bill that would have given incentives to contractors to rebuild current areas rather than open spaces.
Like a piece of grass blowing in the wind, Allen's political principles and beliefs go whichever is politically convenient for her.
Luvitz- ever change your mind?
Alot of people started out supporting Bush and have been left scratching their heads over his actions. From privatizing social security to opening the floodgates to illegal immigrants, he has strayed from the core GOP values. But let me tell you, I shiver to think what could have happened if Gore was in charge when we were faced with national security issues. The best Gore would do is offer them green tea and plead, can't we all just get along. No thanks. I'll take my chances with a hard line flag waving American when it comes to National security. I don't agree that Allen is a hard core Bush gal. She is scratching her head along with the rest of us.
MartinOne - check the votes
Just checked the votes on 1998 asset bill. Connors and Conaway voted yes. Just like they voted yes on asset monitization in July 2007. Guess they still haven't got a clue. They just drink the Koolaid and cast their votes. Lockstep. Time for new faces in the 7th dist Assembly.
Allen's positions, whither they go?
shader: There is a difference there. Unlike Allen, Connors and Conaway didn't vote for the asset monetization study and then attack their opponent and the governor for possibly supporting that aforesaid study.
The cluephone isn't ringing for Conners and Conaway (who recently worked on an important veterans health care bill, btw); it is ringing for out-of-touch incumbent Diane Allen, who just recently stated that the state must live within its means, despite serving in the legislature for 12 years, and has yet to sponsor genuinely meaningful ethics or property tax measures in her time in office.
For all the reasons that Allen is wrong (terrible legislator, changes positions constantly, no core convictions), Dennison, who would lead the fight for public education and expanding health care in the state, is right.
Get Over It
Diane is the known commodity; the one person who actually knows Dennison we met this weekend is NOT impressed and got the same impression of his "utter desperation" to beat Diane. They were not impressed with what he had to say and he came off very very petulant especially when he was talking about Bush. Apparenlty he still thinks he is running agaisnts Bush and Diane is still doing her job. People like Diane; people trust her. No one knows who Dennison is and those who have met him are not impressed and obvioulsy will not be supporting him. Martin knows Diane is going to win, but Martin is beside himself with the knowledge that his democrats actually THINK BEFORE THEY VOTE and that is the difference IMHO between Martin and a REAL EDUCATED VOTER!

Allen: Worst State Senator?
Unlike an unnamed partisan hack on this thread who only mentions generalized platitudes ("Allen is there for her constituents," she is a "known commodity") and says she spoke with a friend of a friend of a friend who said x or y, I'm more interested in her voting record and her leadership, or the lack thereof, in the state senate.
On asset monetization, property tax relief, stem cell research, civil unions, and state debt, Allen has either exacerbated an existing problem through her feckless leadership or been too cautious and politically calculation to do the right thing; for the latter, since she has had her sights on higher office for quite some time, yet continually failed to achieve it, she has failed her district 7 constituents by not being responsive to them and instead adding more problems to the state.
Poor Martin
Let me address your rants please 1. Diane keeps winning because she is doing her job. Isnt that what we elect reps to do or do you dems just make lies and promises and sit back expecting people to do what you say and not by deeds? 2. Diane has a proven record of her work and how she has helped residents. Why do people relect her? Because they know she is trusted and gets things done. 3. Your disgust of those democrats that keep voting for her is insulting. Are you saying that any dem is an idiot if they do not sheepishly go the line? It sure sounds like it./ 4. Stem cell and same sex unions IMHO are not that important to me or to the livlihood of the 7th district. Most people care about keeping their taxes low, open space free and clear, safety in check etc. Obvioulsy in your fringe beliefs those aforementioned issues mean more to you than anything and that is ok for you but not for the majority of the voters. and 5. Marty, you do not even live in the 7th so your points are rather moot to spout your hatred of this woman. You really have a hard time understanding that Diane will win with the help of dems, independents and undeclared, I do know it is a very bitter pill to swallow, but chug it down my friend because once again it will happen. Deadbeat Diane: MIA
That's great that Sen. Allen is beginning to speak with constituents with the help of Assemblyman Conners, who will likely be deservedly reelected in November. Maybe Allen could have taken a leadership position and talked with constituents before now, however; this pertains to high property taxes (Allen finally gets around to putting out a press release about it last week despite serving in the legislature for 12 years) and ethics reform (Boss Paulsen and his corrupt dollars help fund her campaign).
Whether its the switcheroo on asset monetization, her silence on corruption in the BurlCo Republican Party, her lack of a stance on civil rights for gays and lesbians or on stem cell research, or her voting against brownstone restoration, Allen has proven to be an unresponsive, out-of-touch, daydreaming senator who deserves to be replaced in November.
big spender, big borrower, says what she needs to
Unfortunately, Diane Allen's "note of fiscal responsibility" is a wrong note. When Diane Allen first ran for the Senate in 1997, she said she would not vote to raise taxes, and she hasn't. But six months after that election, she proposed raising the gas tax nine cents a gallon -- a frontpage story in the Burlco Times. She also said during the campaign for property tax relief but released no details. After the election, no plan. Five yers ago, she couldn't put out enough press releases mentioning George Bush -- how she went to the White House and pledged never to vote to raise taxes. But she's for Homestead Rebates. She and Christie Whitman cut income taxes by 30%, saving themselves hundreds of thousands of dollars over the last decade. But she introduced bills that could have added about $2 billion -- yes, billion -- dollars to the state budget. The only way to explain these two matters is to know that she wants the state to spend billions on her ideas while other people pay for them. Diane Allen says whatever she needs to say to help her win elections -- then does the opposite. She could have been a reformer because she was famous and wealthy. She's become just another political joke. What a waste!
Mantle couldn't be more correct
Ditto to everything he wrote. Diane is going to have one heck of a time trying to explain all of that and I'm confident Dennison will take her task on those important points. I can't wait! And Gopgal, the MAJOR, MAJOR reason why Diane keeps winning is because of her name recognition from television, not because she's doing an even okay job. Everyone knows this! It takes a lot of work to inform the people of what a lackluster job Diane does in Trenton and that is the amazing effect of Dennison's press conferences. Week by week, the giant Diane gets beaten down more and more and her veil of deception gets pulled away further and further. The voters will know precisely who she is by election day this time around and that won't be a good thing for her.
Still Bashing Whitman?
Ronald do you really believe your own fantasy? I am concerned because come election day you will be a heartbroken man. I am not callous but I am concerned by then you will be so defeaed. While Dennison is out there with this whole R issue, Diane is out there amongst the crowds, talking to people, explaining herself with proof and not fluff. Maybe you should stop insulting those people whom her office actually as helped. The notion of her TV days is crap and you know it. Name recognition does not hurt, but people love Diane and Dennison cannot touch that. I plan to be at the debates held when they are and I am sure you will see regardless of how many people pack the room how Diane will be the one showing how inept Dennison really is. But, again, Diane is a classy person which is more I can say about Dennison. Diane by 10%

PLEASE READ THE LEGISLATION THAT YOU KEEP BANTERING ABOUT, YOU MAY LEARN SOMETHING. IF YOU DON'T LIVE IN THE 7TH THEN SHUT UP AND LEAVE OUR SENATOR ALONE. DENNISON CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO DIANE. SHE DOES HER JOB AND SHE DOES IT RIGHT. THIS IS NOT YOUR FIGHT, GO TO YOUR OWN DISTRICT AND LET THEM KNOW HOW IGNORANT YOU ARE ABOUT THE BILL PASSING PROCESS. YOU NEED A CIVICS LESSON, YOUNG MAN. I SAT FOR 6 DAYS IN THE STATE HOUSE WHILE ROBERTS AND CORZINE HAD A MEXICAN STANDOFF. INCASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW, TAX BILLS MUST ORIGINATE IN THE ASSEMBLY AND THE SPEAKER HAS FINAL SAY ON WHAT WILL BE INTRODUCED.
