WATSON COLEMAN: SCHOOL FUNDING FORMULA
MUST BE DONE PROPERLY, NOT HASTILY
(TRENTON) -- Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman today said Governor Corzine's announcement that a new school funding formula will not be ready for the 2007-2008 academic year means the Legislature must resolve to work even harder to ensure a new formula is in place for the following school year.Watson Coleman (D-Mercer) released the following statement:
"By no means does this delay signal an abandonment of the goal of enacting a formula that treats all schools and schoolchildren equally.
"In fact, this additional time to craft a formula is entirely welcome. With the benefit of more time, we can better ensure that the final plan will be constitutionally defensible and that there will be sufficient input from the educational community and other stakeholders.
"It would be a great injustice to students, teachers, and property taxpayers if we skipped the need for careful modeling and research by throwing together a formula that would land in court before the ink has even dried."
