ROBERTS: CAMPBELL'S EXPANSION
'KEY INGREDIENT' FOR CAMDEN'S FUTURE

Proposed World Headquarters for Renowned Soup Producer
Sends Positive Message for City's Rebirth

(CAMDEN) -- Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts, Jr. today cheered the decision by Campbell Soup Co. to further cement its historic ties to Camden with the planned development of a new world business headquarters in the city’s Gateway Redevelopment District.Campbell's CEO Douglas R. Conant made public the soup-maker's intentions to create a 110-acre, $98 million office complex at a Wednesday morning press conference with Governor Jon S. Corzine and Camden Mayor Gwendolyn Faison.

"Campbell's decision to strengthen and expand its already century-and-a-half year-old commitment to Camden is fantastic news for the city and the entire South Jersey region," said Roberts (D-Camden). "Private investment is the key ingredient to a brighter future for Camden. Campbell's decision to stay in Camden sends a powerful message the city is turning a corner and is worthy of attention by private investors with sound projects that will produce jobs and opportunities for the city’s residents."

The project would be backed by a $72 million investment by Campbell Soup, with an additional $26 million from state, county, and local sources for infrastructure and other improvements.

Campbell Soup has been headquartered in Camden since the company's creation in 1869. As the only Fortune 500 company based in Camden, Campbell Soup also has been one of the city's leading corporate citizens, donating an average of $1.5 million annually to various civic and educational organizations.

Currently, the company's Camden operations provide approximately 1,200 jobs.

"Campbell Soup and Camden have been synonymous for as long as any living resident can remember," said Roberts. "These are the kinds of investments the city needs to elevate its status, stabilize its tax base, and attract new employers and businesses."
