ROBERTS: SCI REPORT ON SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR PAY
SHOWCASES SYSTEM IN NEED OF OVERHAUL
(TRENTON) -- Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts, Jr., today said that a new State Commission of Investigation report examining the compensation of New Jersey school superintendents has brought to light a system of deals and contractual giveaways in need of immediate overhaul. The SCI report, "Taxpayers Beware," highlights a litany of questionable and objectionable practices that have inflated the pay for some school administrators to levels high above what is reported to state education officials and the tax-paying public.
After being briefed on the report, Roberts (D-Camden) released the following statement:
"The SCI report calls attention to practices that are unconscionable, and it exposes how existing state law fails to protect taxpayers.
"The contractual arrangements of some of our superintendents cry out for a lesson plan that will better protect taxpayer interests.
"From pension padding to district-funded junkets to clothing allowances, we need to examine stronger safeguards to protect property taxpayers.
"Assemblyman Michael Panter already has expressed his desire to introduce legislation to enact the SCI's recommendations and I will work with him to ensure that the Assembly takes appropriate action."
