ROBERTS PUTS HIS SCARLET KNIGHT PRIDE
ON THE LINE
Assembly Speaker, Kentucky House Speaker Make Jersey-Blueberries-for-Country-Ham Wager
On Tonight's Rutgers-Louisville Game
(TRENTON) -- Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts, Jr., put his Rutgers pride on the betting line in advance of tonight's highly anticipated game between the Scarlet Knights and the University of Louisville Cardinals, placing a gentlemen's wager with Jody Richards, Speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives. When 15th-ranked Rutgers accomplishes a stunning upset of the 3rd-ranked Cardinals, Roberts will receive a country ham compliments of Speaker Richards. In the unfathomable event that Louisville wins, Roberts has promised to ship several cases of fresh New Jersey blueberries to the Kentucky State House in Frankfort when the state's official fruit -- New Jersey tops the nation in blueberry production -- reaches peak quality next year.
"Given the great pride each of our states take in our respective teams, it is only fitting to wager products equally symbolic of our homes," said Roberts (D-Camden), a Rutgers-Camden alumnus. "Speaker Richards and his staff shouldn't be over-confident on having several pints of New Jersey blueberries to enjoy next summer, however. After the Scarlet Knights carve up Louisville tonight, there should be a nice Kentucky country ham to carve up while watching Rutgers continue their run to a major bowl game."
