With the self-imposed deadline of Aug. 20 five days past and the Atlantic County Democrat Party still without a candidate for county clerk, Republican chairman Keith A. Davis today offered a list of reasons for the Democrats’ inability to select a candidate.
Borrowing from late night talk show host and comedian David Letterman, Davis listed the “Top Ten Reasons Why The Democrats Can’t Find A Candidate.�
10. The calendar in Democratic headquarters stops at Aug. 20.
9. The envelope hasn’t arrived from Camden County yet with the candidate’s name written on a piece of paper.
8. They’re looking for someone willing to deliver 1,000 messenger applications for absentee ballots to the clerk’s office on the day before the election.
7. They want someone who Jim Carroll doesn’t like.
6. Alisa Cooper says it would be nepotism if she was selected.
5. Jim Whelan wants the office to shut down for a few days just to see what happens.
4. They’re afraid Marty Small will want to plan the fund raising parties.
3. They need someone who doesn’t need driving directions to the Camden County Democrat Party headquarters to pick up a check from George Norcross.
2. Ron Ruff needs someone who can win the county committee endorsement by more than three votes.
1. They can’t find anyone who can defeat Sonya Harris.
And, the bonus reason, said Davis: They had a candidate until it was discovered he had a “Where Was Whelan?� bumper sticker affixed to his car.
