ANGELINI ON CORZINE COMMENTS: IS THIS THE SAME GOVERNOR WHO IS PROPOSING TO IMPOSE AN 800 PERCENT TOLL HIKE?

GOVERNOR’S OPPOSITION TO NYC TOLL HIKE IS HYPOCRISY

Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini today said she is shocked by Governor Jon Corzine’s staunch opposition to the new congestion pricing toll at the Hudson River crossings given Corzine’s own support for massive toll hikes on New Jersey commuters.

“I think most New Jersey residents must have done a double-take upon reading the governor’s comments on the New York toll plan,” said Angelini, R-Monmouth. “To propose an 800 percent toll hike on our own residents, but then to express anger when someone else proposes a toll hike is either hypocritical or disingenuous.”

Corzine last week criticized New York City officials for proposing a congestion pricing toll plan imposing an extra $3 to $4 “surcharge” on those tolls paid by New Jersey drivers using the Hudson River crossings to enter Manhattan. The governor has even said that he plans to go to court and take legal action to stop the plan.

This comes while Corzine has yet to abandon his own plan to hike New Jersey tolls by 800 percent for New Jersey commuters who use the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike.

“The governor is right that New Jersey residents cannot afford, and should not be forced to pay, higher tolls to commute into New York,” Angelini said. “But he should acknowledge that they also cannot afford, and should not be forced to pay, higher tolls on their own highways here in New Jersey.”
