Burlington County Republican Chairman Bill Layton said he was disappointed in the news that Anne Evans Estabrook would be suspending her U.S. Senate bid today, and anticipates his organization throwing its support behind state Sen. Joseph Pennacchio (R-Morris).
"My guess is Joe Pennacchio will be the endorsed candidate barring an unforseen circumstance," Layton said.
The county GOP chairman wished Estabrook well, and expressed concern for her health.
"She called me from the hospital last night," said Layton, whose organization had endorsed the Spring Lake businesswoman at its convention after the steering committee recommended her over Pennacchio by a vote of 3-2.
"I’m a little disappointed because I think with her ability to raise the most money, she had the best chance of beating Frank Lautenberg," Layton said. "But Joe Pennacchio will up for a battle. By Anne stepping out, people will coalesce behind one candidate and that will be good for the party.
"She was very supportive," Layton added of Estabrooks' financial contribution to the Burlington County GOP, "but by the way, so was Joe."

Yeah your disappointed all right. Your bank account is gonna be a little lighter and you will have to do the unthikable-actually raise money on your own. Roll up your sleeves and do your job you phony!
Settle Down
I doubt there will be any problems for the Burlington County GOP raising money this year. They will continue to be the dominate Republican Party in South Jersey.
I commend Bill for choosing Pennachio - he has what it takes to beat Laughtenberg.
Pennacchio
Republicans must come together if they hope to defeat grand-pa Lautenberg. New Jersey residents are weary of his expensive politcal antics and can't wait to have him removed.
Joe Pennacchio is the only viable candidate who can defeat Lautenberg. Pull it together Republicans.
