Campaign event places Orange mayoral rivals on same stage

Eldridge Hawkins Jr.Eldridge Hawkins Jr.Senate President Richard Codey’s Obama endorsement on Thursday brought out the City of Orange’s two main rivals to succeed Mayor Mims Hackett: Councilman Donald Page and Eldridge Hawkins, Jr.

Son of former Assemblyman Eldridge Hawkins, who was Codey’s running mate in the 1970s, Hawkins said he had attended the event on invitations from Codey and Orange Councilman Hassan Abdul-Rasheed.

"The fact that you can have two mayoral opponents on the same stage is a testament to how Obama transcends local politics," said Hawkins. "I’m running for mayor on a theme of unification for a better Orange, in a similar spirit as Obama’s theme of uniting the country."

A one-time challenger to Codey’s senate seat, Page questioned Hawkins’ legitimate right to stand on the stage with elected officials and Obama delegate candidates.

"I think he’s just seeking publicity," said Page, who is a delegate candidate for Obama in the same district in which Codey’s name will appear on the ballot as a delegate candidate for former Sen. John Edwards.

Following the ceremony, Abdul-Rasheed introduced Hawkins to Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who told the candidate he is happy to see a young person running to be the next mayor of Orange.

Donald Page Get A Grip

It makes me wonder why Donald Page is so negative. Is it perhaps that he has no compaign platform therefore he resorts to ignorance? Seems to be. He is this same way in City Council meetings. Donald a bit of advise. Clearly you have no platform at this juncture in your campaign. You are not gaining any respect or serious consideration from the voters by spouting ingorant and a lot of times incoherent rhetoric. Clearly you have not done your homework in terms of identifying the constituency. We are professional people, well educated, concerned about the city government or lack there of, taxes, the needless poor performance of our school system, lack of recreational facilities and the dilapidated business district. Are you adressing any of there issues, or more to the point are you addressing any of these issues in an intelligible manner ? We are looking for educated, intelligent, accountable leadership. Not loud boisterous, ignorant rhetoric. Donald GET A GRIP.

Orange-in a state of transition

Whomever the voters of Orange pick they need to consider ledership under Hackett which produced, from published accounts, very little except the usual  cronyism that Essex is noted for.  Plus Orange and Glen Ridge were cited a couple years ago as the two communities with the highest property tax burden in the state.  Don't know whether that is still true but its shocking! That article cited the closing of orange hsopital and no redevelopment plan in place to bring growth and jobs. Where was Page to bring new ratables and homeowners into that city? What leadership has he afforded in terms of educational equity, which is lacking in urban centers across the state and adds to the property tax burden.  people are tired of empty rhetoric, especially in challenged economic times. Was Page a part of the problem since he's been around a long time?  Don't know, but he better distance himself from anything smelling like Hackett and crew.  That ship is sinking.  Orange doesn't need  to re-arrange the chairs of Titanic.

State of Education In Orange

Recently I met the valedictorian of the class of 2007 from Orange High. Among many things that concerned him he was most concerned that here he was the top of the class and he has had to take remedial courses in college. He stated that it was not for lack of resources, the school was well equipped with the latest and greatest in technology. He did wonder why the course of study was not geared toward attending college and why with all the resourses available they were not being utilized.  His conclusion was that either the administration is lacking or there is just plain gross mismanagement on the part of everyone responsible for educating the students of Orange. This is from our valedictorian !!  Our students should not take this sitting down. If your education is lacking due to mismanagement then if you are old enough to vote you need to check out the candidates and strongly voice your concerns and urge your fellow students to vote. If you are not old enough to vote you can still be informed on the issues and make sure the adults you know do get out to vote. It's your education, make sure you are getting the best.
