LEGISLATIVE BLACK CAUCUS HIGHLIGHTS BUDGET PRIORITIES

TRENTON Members of the New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus held a news conference today, to outline priorities for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.  Caucus Chairman Senator Ronald L. Rice, D-Essex, delivered remarks.

“Considering the tough fiscal times we’re experiencing on both the State and National levels, it is imperative that funds are available for those members of our population who are not always able to speak for themselves – the poor, unemployed,  homeless, the disabled and seniors on fixed incomes,” said Chairman Rice.  “We have to serve as their advocates.”

Chairman Rice highlighted the need for the Caucus to join with civil rights leaders, business, labor and clergy organizations to help better serve the people of New Jersey.

“Education and resources are the keys to enabling residents to live self-sufficiently. Many of our members represent urban districts, but some of us also represent suburban populations.  We have to make sure that the needs of all New Jerseyans are addressed,” Chairman Rice said.

Chairman Rice went on to note that representatives of the Caucus must be present at the leadership table when decisions are made that affect the minority community.

“For those of us who represent urban districts, many of us were elected because, among other things, we look like the people we represent.  They chose us to serve as their voice here in Trenton, because they know we’ll bring attention to their needs.  We have to work together to make sure that the needs of all New Jerseyans are considered – not just those who have the funds and resources to make their own voices heard,” said Chairman Rice. #
