COLLETTI FOR SENATE
38th District – Bergen County
In a statement issued to the website politicsnj.com, Coniglio’s spokesman says the senator is “definitely running for re-election.”
“I’m happy that the Democrats have finally cleared the air and have decided on their candidate,” says Colletti. “Now we can get on with a debate schedule and make the preparations we need to present ourselves to the voters.”
Colletti issued a debate challenge to Coniglio on Monday, but after repeatedly faxing a debate request letter to Coniglio’s office, he has not received a reply yet. “If the senator is definitely running – and I have no reason to think otherwise – then I wish he would reply to my debate request before too much time elapses,” said the candidate.
Colletti said the fact that Coniglio is under federal investigation into steering millions in state grants to his former employer -- Hackensack Medical Center -- even though the hospital is outside his district, will not be the focus of his campaign.
“Corruption is certainly something we cannot tolerate in state government,” said Colletti. “But Joe Coniglio is not the source of all the corruption committed in Trenton. There is an unfortunate tolerance and even encouragement of corruption by the Democrat Party leaders in Trenton and in Bergen County, which will have to be dealt with by law enforcement.”
“My campaign is not just about eliminating corruption; it’s about helping the beleaguered taxpayers who have been punished by Sen. Coniglio and his colleagues,” said Colletti.
Colletti, a former Elmwood Park Councilman, noted that Coniglio is a puppet in the Democrat machine in Trenton that raised state spending by $11 billion in just five years and increased 94 taxes, including the sales tax. He also said Coniglio failed to do anything to stop the abuse of eminent domain in the state and is supporting Gov. Corzine’s plan to sell the NJ Turnpike and other toll roads.
“The real indictment of Sen. Coniglio is that he has supported every spending increase initiative that has been put before him in Trenton. He is a puppet for the leadership of his party, which has put New Jersey into a financial crisis,” said Colletti.
“Coniglio and his Democrat colleagues should be indicted for misleading taxpayers about tax reform. The people wanted real tax reform, which means lower taxes and less spending. Instead Coniglio voted to raise 94 taxes, including the sales tax which has been expanded to more services.
“Now, Trenton is poised to send out so-called tax rebate checks that are nothing but an election year gimmick. The state is simply giving people back the money they paid in higher taxes for the past year. That’s not tax reform; that’s deception,” added Colletti.
“I look forward to debating Sen. Coniglio and asking him to explain why he voted so many times to raise taxes and why his employer got millions in taxpayer dollars but all that taxpayers got was a bill,” concluded Colletti
