COLLETTI OPPOSES DRIVER’S LICENSE FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS
CHALLENGES GORDON TO DO THE SAME
ELMWOOD PARK NJ -- State Senate candidate Robert Colletti says he is opposed to giving valid drivers’ licenses to illegal aliens and he is encouraging the state legislature to put New York State Gov. Eliot Spitzer on notice that licenses issued in that state will not be recognized in New Jersey.
“Driving in a privilege, not a right. It is absolutely absurd for Gov. Spitzer or any official to advocate giving valid driver’s licenses to people who broke the law to get into America,” said Colletti. “Every day American citizens lose their license for an infraction of the law, but now liberals like Mr. Spitzer want to reward illegal aliens with a privilege reserved for honest, hard working Americans.”
GORDON CHALLENGED
Colletti is calling on his Democrat opponent in District 38 Assemblyman Robert Gordon to denounce Spitzer’s plan to pledge to vote against giving New Jersey driver’s licenses to illegal aliens.
“Bob Gordon and the other liberals in his party have to stop pandering to the extreme illegal alien lobby that wants to reward people for breaking into our country,” said Colletti “They are pandering for minority votes and are putting their re-election ahead of our safety and security. It’s time Bob Gordon took a stand for families not his political future.”
BAD POLICY
Colletti said giving illegals a driver’s license is bad policy on a number of fronts “One, it is another inducement or reward for people who want sneak into our country. Two it is a national security and safety concern. Once a person has a valid driver’s license they have access to numerous other benefits associated with citizenship.”
Colletti said it would be impossible for motor vehicle department personnel to determine the background of illegal aliens, some of whom may have criminal histories in their own country and may also have forged birth certificates and passports.
“We could easily end up giving drivers’ licenses to people involved in drug trafficking, gang activity or street crimes. When we do that, we will make it easier for these people to infiltrate our neighborhoods and commit more crimes.
Colletti noted that with illegals easily moving back and forth to their home country, motorists involved in car accidents with an illegal would be jeopardized. “If they are in the country illegally what makes anyone think that they are going to be properly insured and that they will not flee to avoid responsibility for a car accident?’ asked Colletti
Colletti said many of the illegal aliens in the United States are hard working people and he is not disparaging all aliens, but he also said we can’t ignore the fact that many are also here committing crimes. He noted the recent case n Newark where an illegal immigrant has been implicated in the ritual killing of four teenagers in a school
A week ago three illegal aliens from El Salvador were charged with repeated sexual assault o an underage girl in Garfield and in May 2006 an illegal immigrant from Ecuador was charged with raping a6 year old girl with Down’s syndrome from Hackensack
“I don’t think we want to give these people access to our roadways and to our neighborhoods,” said Colletti. “Maybe Mr. Godon does, but I don’t.”
