Lautenberg declines to attend FDU debate

The Frank Lautenberg Senate campaign today turned down an open-ended debate invitation from Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind research center.

That marks the second event that Lautenberg has declined to participate in. The first was a joint forum sponsored by the Press of Atlantic City and Richard Stockton College, to be held on the college’s Pomona campus.  Andrews has agreed to participate in 10 others, but Lautenberg has not yet committed to any.

“What Andrews said was that he accepted the invitation and that he would debate anywhere, anytime. What we said to Lautenberg was that we would look with him to find any date that was convenient to him,” said Professor Peter Woolley, referring to the campaign staffs. “We could do almost any date. We were very flexible.”

The campaign told Emilio Javier, a graduate assistant who was coordinating the event, that they were “contemplating other options at this time.”

In a familiar turn of events, Lautenberg’s Democratic primary rival, Rob Andrews, held a conference call to press Lautenberg on committing to at least seven debates. Andrews was informed by PolitickerNJ.com during the call that Lautenberg had turned down the FDU invitation, which he had accepted without condition.

“So that’s two rejections,” said Andrews. “At least they’re geographically balanced.”

Andrews was joined on the call by state Sen. Bob Smith, who said that Lautenberg needs to “come out of the cave.”

“Quite frankly, if (Lautenberg) survives the primary, in the fall the Republican candidate for US Senate is going to rip him to shreds, because he just can’t get away with this,” said Smith.

Andrews’s wife, Camille, is running for the congressional seat he’s vacating in the 1st district, though she’ll step aside if party leaders field a different candidate. Andrews said he thinks she would be willing to debate her two primary challengers.

“She would speak for herself, but I have no question that she would,” he said.

Lautenberg spokeswoman Julie Roginsky said that the campaign is in the process of scheduling debates right now.

“There will be debates,” she said.

Lautenberg turns down ANOTHER debate

Lautenberg doesn't want to debate because he is out of touch with the issues. Doesn't he live in New York??? If someone could answer this question for me I would appreciate that.

thanks

Yeah

I'll believe it when I see it.

05/05/08 7:11 pm

Very disappointing!

FL has certainly done good things for NJ in the past, but does he have the vitality to win in future challenges of front-line politics?--he needs to prove it soon.

Frank is a caveman!

State Senator Smith called on Frank to “come out of the cave.” I think that residing in a cave in New York must have adverse effect on Frank's debating ability. I suggest that Frank moves to a New Jersey cave, preferably in Ramapo Mountains. The fresh air and mountainous views might refresh his memory.

Granny doesn't care!

He'll just throw street money in Hudson, Essex, Union, and Passaic Counties, and the major cities, where the residents receive most of our state tax dollars from the "party"...THE DEEP BLUE CITIES! He believes that should carry him back into office without debate. Granny's in hiding.

05/05/08 8:35 pm

ahhh...don't hold your breath..Frank won't debate.....

"There will be debates,” she said.

Sure.....just not including Lautenberg.

Such a weak move from a weak man.

05/06/08 6:38 am

So tired

05/06/08 8:15 am

Comfort Zone

Hey maybe FL just doesn't feel comfortable debating in certain places. So cut him some slack! After all he is a senior citizen and we should treat elders nicely.

Maybe he would take the challenge if it were in Manhattan or the Hudson County Dem Machine's laps.

Lautenberg for NY SENATE!

05/06/08 8:18 am

If this keeps up...

...voters should consider Lautenberg's cowardice as tantamount to a forfeit.

05/06/08 9:05 am

And what exactly is contemptuous about Andrews' behavior?

That he dared challenge you?

05/06/08 9:07 am

Caught in a lie?

...I thought the debate problem was Lautenberg's busy schedule. I took him at his word that it was just a question of "getting the schedulers together." Now we see this morning that he turned down FDU's neutral invitation to debate on ANY day open on Lautenberg's schedule???

What is he so afraid of?

His cowardice is tantamount to a forfeit. We cannot elect someone who is mentally and physically unwilling or unable to debate. That's the job of being a senator, for crying out loud. The greatest debate society in the world??

05/06/08 9:33 am

Lautenberg is a joke and everyone knows it

He is a nightmare when it comes to public speaking...Andrews should start showing up at Lautenberg's events and debate him on the spot.

05/06/08 9:35 am

Good

Keep turning them down. It only helps Rob. No reason to outline just how alike you are. Why would anyone want to debate George Norcro...I mean Rob Andre...no wait I mean George Norcross, definatly George Norcross.

05/06/08 9:41 am

Three times this week

First, Lautenberg refused to debate Andrews at Richard Stockton College, then he refused to meet jointly with Andrews with the Philadelphia Inquirer editorial board, and now he refuses any debate with Andrews at Farleigh-Dickinson. Lautenberg is doing the voters of New Jersey a disservice by refusing to face the public in a series of debates with Andrews; the process is not a coronation, senator, and you need to prove in a public forum why you're deserving of reelection.

05/06/08 9:48 am

So, how's it feel...

to know that we elected a guy 4 times to the same seat who now feels it is unnecessary to share his values and beliefs with us? Just because he's been in office so long and because he's 84 years old does not give him a pass. He needs to earn re-election. If he wins, and runs again when he's 90, he'd still need to earn our votes. That goes for 96, 102, 108, and every age after. He's an embarrassment and a coward. It takes courage to come face to face with opposition - not just in politics but in all things. Don't we want a US Senator who has courage? I would think so. Lautenberg is not a courageous man. A courageous man does not hide behind his own ego and arrogance.

05/06/08 9:51 am

Again

What issues will they debate? What issues do they disagree on...other than Andrews blind support for Bush?

05/06/08 10:17 am

courageous

By the way what kind of a man lets himself be bossed by another man for 20 plus years all for the sake of being an elected official (in name only we all know George has the power). Andrews has no authority to talk about being courageous when he has been the lapdog of a corrupt powerbroker for 25 years. Give me a break, Andrews is at best Norcross's best dog

05/06/08 10:19 am

SJBlue you may be right about Andrews.......

Clearly, you know a little bit more about Andrews than I do. You're prob right about him and his lack of ability to act independently of Norcross.

But that's not the point here. In today's political arena, it is pretty much expected that when a major statewide candidate is challenged to a debate, he needs to repsond. Not seven of them, that's ridiculous; but at least one. AT LEAST.

I just wish Lautenberg had as much vigor and fight in him as you do. If he doesn't, he probably shouldn't be our representative in the Senate.

Is Andrews a lapdog? Probably. Is there any rule that they HAVE to debate? NO. But, c'mon. It's VERY VERY small of Lautenberg, a seasoned pro at this game, to punk and run, hoping the clock runs out until the primary.

05/06/08 10:32 am

TYPICAL

behavior, SJBLue. You can't defend the liberal democrat you so blindly support... he's ducking debates because he knows he'll look old and out of touch next to a younger, more vigorous candidate. So what's the action you take? Not thinking twice about supporting Lautenberg. Oh no, you just go after his opponent and attack him. As for me personally, I'd rather support a candidate I could truly believe in, not just blindly support someone who has a D or R by their name and who is the lesser of two evils.

05/06/08 10:38 am

I actually

Have been a hughe FL fan since the early days. He has been a strong voice for NJ for decades. His authoriship and early lead on the smoking ban, his transportaion expertise, and his work on the Homeland Security Committee, his leadership on the Dubai ports debacle (to name just a few) has always impressed me. He would be my candidate regardless of Andrews success. FL has been an unbossed, and progressive leader for NJ, Andrews cannot say the same on either count. Hence, I would support the strong progressive campiagn. The FL campiagn has said that debates will happen. I am sure that they will, however Andrews strategy backfired. FL will debate him, but now Andrews has built up these debates as something of a David vs. Goliath moment. Andrews will be frustrated and trigger happy and FL will be in control. Andrews wanted to set the tone and tempo of this debate and Frank wont let him-what is wrong with that. Andrews candidacy does not mean that Frank doesnt have a right to try and frame this campaign as well. Andrews making a big fuss over the refusals to a few of the invitations is just more press jockying. FL's campiagn has said that there will be debates. I am certain that it happens. Lautenberg has not refused to debate him, just declined two of ten invites-there is a big difference. As far as Rob goes saying YES to every invite does not put him on the high road. Rob wants to be Gov in 09 so he needs these debates for name ID not to highlight his differences with Frank Lautenberg. Rob's pulling a stunt and Frank isnt letting him get away with it. That is fair game in politics.

05/06/08 10:56 am

All right, SJBlue, that's fair........

You made excellent points on why you're supporting FL. I'll buy that, but with that said, I look forward to hearing your defense if no debates go down.

Wait and see, I guess. :)

05/06/08 12:58 pm

Lautenberg will debate ...

... at the very end of the primary period (probably the last week) in order to avoid Andrews using his mental and verbal incontinence against him with several weeks left in the campaign. If FL debates this week, he gives Andrews enough time to use his expectedly weak performance against him -- specifically, proof on the video tape that the age issue is not just an abstract concept but a dismal reality that will turn voters against him. FL can likely withstand a poor debate showing late in the game.  His handlers know this and will postpone until as late as possible.

Regardless of what FL has done in his career, he is afraid to stand toe to toe with his opponent because he knows he's a tired old man who -- to use Frank's own description of 72 year old Millicent Fenwick -- now constitutes a "national monument" rather than a vigorous representative of the people of NJ. This is not the kind of narco-leadership NJ deserves.

05/06/08 2:10 pm

Thanks

I am looking forward to these debates as well. I want to see Andrews defend his record-I don't think Frank has that trouble

Can Andrews Answer These Questions???

Just click on the link...then read, then think.

If any Andrews supprters care to take a crack at answering the questions, that would be great too! :-)

Nick, SJBlue

With Lautenberg, N.J. is dead last in terms of federal tax dollars received in return from the federal government, he neither asks townships in N.J. what their concerns are nor visits them, and he is not viewed as a powerful, influential voice in Washington (hence his lack of successful legislation in the past decade, his inability to bring federal dollars to the state, his lack of influence despite cushy positions, including on the powerful Appropriations Committee).

Surely, his record alone merits that he be replaced; we can build power and influence for N.J. with Andrews, whom his colleagues describe as "brilliant" and who has an astute understanding of complex legislation, as senator over time rather than through having a final term for Lautenberg.
