Conservative ex-wrestler weighs bid for Ferguson seat

Michael Illions, aka A.J. Sparxx, a former professional wrestler who runs the political activist organization and blog Conservatives With Attitude, has never held elected office. But Jesse “The Body” Ventura only served four years as the mayor of a relatively small suburban town before he was elected Governor of Minnesota.

So Illions, 42, thinks people shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss him as a potential congressional candidate in the seventh district.

If Jesse ‘The Body’ can do it, I can do it,” said Illions, who sent around an email asking friends and supporters to vote for him in an unscientific PolitickerNJ.com poll asking who the strongest Republican candidate to replace retiring U.S. Rep Mike Ferguson is (Illions is currently ranked 6th out of 16, with 103 votes).

Illions said that he won’t run if someone who meets his conservative standards, and who has more experience and an organization, steps in. But nobody’s appeared on the horizon so far, which has Illions seriously considering the possibility.

But aside from lack of funds and organization – and the Republican primary disadvantage of being from Middlesex County -- Illions will have to weigh whether he’ll be able to run for office with a two year old son who suffers from hydrocephalus, and has had to have 11 brain surgeries. That caused him to drop a bid for Woodbridge Council in 2005.

“I’m leaning towards forming an exploratory committee,” said Illions, who case his first vote for Ronald Reagan in 1984. He’s been true to core conservative values ever since, and will take an “independent” stand from the rest of the party if necessary, he said.

“I know (independent) is a big buzzword. I mean independent of what the party dictates and just sticking by my own principles that adhere to my own platform,” said Illions.

One potential candidate Illions doesn’t consider to be conservative enough for his tastes is outgoing Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance, the presumptive favorite for the nomination.

Lance is too liberal on social issues, said Illions, and signed a letter to U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett urging him to cast a vote to override President Bush’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

“I would say that it would be a disappointment to conservatives and to Republican tradition if he was to run and win. I don’t think he represents what I consider the republican platform and the conservative base,” said Illions.

Run Mike Run..

I may not agree with Mike on a number of issues, but he should definately give it a shot. It's encouraging to see someone who could be considered an outsider run for any office.  R. Matthew Fretz did it as an independent in 06',  Juan Melli was featured on a poll on this site  of people who could run for Rush Holt's seat where I believe he placed first, why can't Mike give it a shot?

If he chooses to run I wish him the best of luck.

Just for fun.

If he was 19 in Nov. of 1988, that would make him 39 now, not 42.

Hmm....

If Sparxx cast his first vote for Reagan in 1988, maybe he has had a few too many faux knocks to the head to go to Congress...

What's his slogan going to be?

I want to body slam Linda Stender?

Poor Lance, the guy hasn't officially jumped in yet and two potential candidates are already cricizing him for being a moderate republican....

Than again..you wonder if Lance hurt himself with that crappy job he did as Senate Minority Leader.

At least he's done more than Kate Whitman..

I'd rather see Illions run for Assembly

Republicans are not being smart in allocating our talent. We need a strong candidate in the 19th District to take on left-wing Mayor-Assemblyman Joe Vas. Moreover, Woodbridge used to be a Republican town and Illions can change it back. This will prepare him for a run for Woodbridge Mayor and or State Senate, and maybe Congress.
Just like Bret Schundler, we need people to start cracking at "Blue Jersey." Do u realize that going north of Exit 8A on the Turnpike travelling to the city you pass only through Democratic Legislative districts? This must change.

It is refreshing to have a person who has laid out his political views for all to see; no bull, no Texas-two-step, no triangulation or mincing words. I don't think that you will get honesty and truth from any of the "insiders" on the list.

Mike Illions would double the number of New Jersey Republican Congressmen serving in Congress. We should not pass up this opportunity.

Mike Illions for Congress

As a registered, but independent-minded Republican in the 7th District, I would welcome Mr. Illions to the primary race.  And given the current field, both declared and speculative, I'd probably vote for him or any other non-RINO with a backbone or without a mom who writes books like, "It's My Party, Too".

That said, and based upon the makeup fo the redrawn 7th, I have to admit that a moderate Republican (whatever that is) like Sir Lance-A-Little has the best chance of holding the seat for the GOP in 2008.  And maybe running a young woman (little Whitperson) against Wide-Ender Stender wouldn't be such a bad idea, either.

Back to Illions: he'd need some Big -Time fundraiser like Eisenberg to get behind him to beat Truth-Bender Stender, who is likely to outsepnd any GOPer at least 5-1.

Good luck finding such a person.
