CORZINE HOLDS TOWN HALL MEETING-IN SOUTH ORANGE
Will Governor Fulfill Promise to Explain Secret Toll Hike Plan?

Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-Bergen) called upon Governor Corzine to release the details of his secret toll road sale plot at town hall meeting being held tonight at the South Orange Performing Arts Center in South Orange

“Governor Corzine must live up to his administration’s publicly stated promise to explain to the public his secret scheme to sell off our toll roads while exponentially raising tolls on Bergen County motorists,” said Cardinale.  If the governor fails to explain his proposal to the public at this meeting, it will speak volumes about the secretive nature of his plan and the cynical efforts they have employed to keep details of the clandestine plan from the public.”

“As long as the governor is coming to North Jersey, he must defend his proposal to impose historic increases in tolls that constitute nothing less than a new tax on driving, he should have ready answers for the following questions that he failed to address in his ‘core principles’:

·        How high will tolls go up under your plan?  Will the hikes be tied to the rate of inflation after the initial increase?

(-more-)

·        Will your administration permit Goldman Sachs to play any role whatsoever in the toll road plan or any subsequent bond issuance by the State using proceeds from the toll road sale plan?

  • How can lawmakers and governors be prevented from frittering away the money?

·        Please give us the names of legislators; Democrat or Republican who support your toll hike plan?

·        Do you have a detailed plan to ensure that trucks and other vehicles seeking to avoid higher tolls will not increase congestion on local roads?

“The people of Bergen County are waiting for an explanation of the details of the governor’s plan for decades of higher tolls and increased borrowing.  If the governor and the Democrat legislators who will vote to sell off the toll roads really think their scheme is such a good idea, then they should have no problem explaining it in a public forum.”
