Sandra Cunningham, the widow the Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningam, is expected to announce her candidacy for State Senator on Thursday at the Liberty House in Jersey City. She will challenge incumbent Joseph Doria in the 31st district Democratic primary, attempting to win the seat her late husband held before his death in 2004. Possible candidates for State Assembly on the Cunningham ticket include former Bayonne Municipal Court Judge Patrick Conaghan (who forced Doria into a runoff last year for Mayor of Bayonne), Jersey City Councilwoman Viola Richardson, Hudson County Sheriff Joseph Cassidy, Jersey City Councilman Steve Fulop, and Bayonne Councilman Anthony Chiappone, who served in the Assembly from 2004 to 2006 after defeating Doria in the '03 Democratic primary.

This is going to be very interesting. The state and HCDO people will have to choose sides carefully. I don't doubt Sandra's resolve, the question is does she get enough support in Bayonne to beat Doria? I think the Cunningham legacy will carry her in Jersey City, he was a great mayor.
And if she wins the primary, do Doria supporters back her, or do they actually make this a competitive general election race in a district that was close in 1991? Or does even one person drop out of the primary and run as an Independent?

Interesting. I think Ms. Cunningham should stay away from Chiappone, but Conaghan will help her not get blown out in Bayonne.

Hmmmm... Judging by all the clamor, it would seem that no one really cares what Lady One does. Yawn, Her annouuncement should be as exciting as what the ol' Groundhog does on Friday.
This will finally put the last nail in Sandra's political coffin
This will finally put the last nail in Sandra's political coffin and put an end to all this endless saber rattling. Her time to run was 3 years ago. Plus her appeal is not the same as her husband's, she is not well liked by her husband's formers.

True, she is not as well liked as her late husband, but because of the demographics of that district and because well, it IS a Jersey City seat -- she could very well beat Doria.
The 800 lb gorilla in the room is Steve Fulop. If she can convince Fulop to run with her that would be a huge advantage. Fulop is very popular in his ward and starting to become a force throughout the city. He can raise serious money and is loved by the press.
However, he will most pass on this opportunity and run for mayor against Healy which will be an epic showdown.
This will continue to get interesting.

Steve Fulop?, Oh please, The Ward E Wonderboy only won because the former councilman ran a poor camapign and was never in his district. Fulop got lucky, PERIOD!
Fulops's appeal is not that far reaching and many people are seeing him for what he is, a media hound, not a media darling, worried more about challenging the system for headlines and photo ops then actual solutions.
Even his own ward is growing tried of his antics. Fulop publicly backed and supported several Board of Education candidates last year and they all got creamed, even in his own ward, so where is this 'appeal' even in a low turnout BOE election? He's got no juice.
Little Stevie will never consider an assembly run as it will tarnish his mayoral aspirations for 2009.
Doria is a class act and should be reelected easily. What gives
Doria is a class act and should be reelected easily. What gives with Mrs. Cunningham? Does she have any experience besides being the wife of a deceased former mayor?

Grover,
The thing is that the demographics here are not in Doria's favor with an African-American? Do you think Doria can even get 20% in the Greenville section of JC? I just don't think he has the wind in him for a blowout in Bayonne. I think he'll be lucky to get 56% in Bayonne and 39% in JC.
If you calculate it, that leaves Doria with a 54-46% loss, (assuming a 60-40 JC/Bayonne split). Doria's best might be to find a third candidate (an African-American from Jersey City) who can deny Cunningham a majority in Jersey City and take away a few of her votes in Bayonne. Perhaps that minister who challenged Payne back in 2002 would run.
