There is considerable speculation that Passaic County Democratic Chairman John Currie, will step down after the election. Look for Sheriff Gerald Speziale, who has emerged as the county's most popular and powerful leader, to either take the job himself or decide who gets it.
Under Currie's leadership, Passaic County has gone from a 7-0 Republican majority on the Board of Freeholders to 7-0 Democratic majority. Democrats have won the County Clerk and Sheriffs posts held by the GOP, and Passaic County Republicans have lost the Senate seat and two Assembly seats they held as recently as six years ago.
