Governor Jon S. Corzine, Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts, Senate President Dick Codey and Assemblyman/Democratic Party Chairman Joseph Cryan have called on arrested Assemblymen Mims Hackett and Alfred Steele to resign by the end of the weekend, according to a statement issued by the Democratic State Committee this afternoon.
"I’m saddened that we’re at a position that we had to call for resignations. On the other hand, they had to be done. You can’t tolerate this stuff," the Democrats said in a statement.
The one day response contrasts with the calls for state Senators Wayne Bryant and Sharpe James after their corruption arrests. Cryan was the first legislator to call for their resignations, a week after James was arrested and several months after Bryant was indicted.
"You try to recognize there’s a point of innocence until proven guilty, but you also recognize that the public confidence is there," said Cryan. "We’re in a quandary.... We’re asking for a new candidate 60 days out in a very competitive district and with them is this accusation… It’s something we’ve got to do.”

I trust Roberts would do/say same should the Bryant probe cast a wider net around Camden County...
Too little, too late.
Maybe the Democrats can hold a workshop in AC on how to avoid FBI Stings and develop new spin on how to blame Chris Christie for this embedded sense of entitlement.
Steele getting a raw deal
Reading what Assemblyman Steele did, how is it criminal? He took money to try to influence elected official of governing bodies, of which he was NOT one, to take official action, completely unrelated to his public office. Is this not what lobbyists do in Trenton every day? Is this not what many elected officials do in connection with their own private businesses? Is this not America, innocent until proven guilty?
bla bla bla
If they don't resign, will Roberts and Codey just walk away or will the begin expulsion proceedings? If Coniglio gets indicted, do they treat him like they treat urban politicians? Talk is cheap.
