District 8 Assemblyman Fran Bodine and his running mates, Tracy Riley and Chris Fifis, today threw punches in the direction of outgoing Republican State Sen. Martha Bark, who is under state investigation in connection with money she received from the Burlington County Bridge Commission for part-time work.
In response, County GOP spokesman Chris Russell said the Democrats' press conference amounted to little more than damage control for Bodine.
Bark was quoted in the Sept. 30th edition of the Courier Post as saying of voters, "They're far more concerned about property taxes and issues of finances than they are of ethics. Anyone that's in the Legislature ought to be dealing with the issues that the public is most concerned with."
Bodine, who is running for state Senate, and Fifis and Riley challenged their opponents to join them in denouncing Bark’s comment specifically, and "the culture of corruption and cronyism synonymous with the Burlington County GOP," in general.
"Her statements are disappointing but hardly surprising," said Bodine, a veteran GOP lawmaker who joined the Democratic Party earlier this year. "Sen. Bark and the Burlington County GOP were never concerned with ethical behavior before, so why would they start now? This is precisely why I left the Republican Party. Boss Glen Paulsen and his cronies are completely out of touch with what New Jersey voters want and what our government needs. If my opponent has any respect for the voters, he will denounce the Burlington County GOP's culture of corruption and pledge to stand with honest politicians to fight for comprehensive ethics reform."
A flabbergasted Russell said Bodine lacks credibility, particularly in the wake of recent press coverage he’s received.
"I can only assume that Bodine, Riley and Fifis must have missed the devastating article that ran statewide in Gannett Newspapers today slamming career politician Fran Bodine for bragging about using his influence to put family on the public payroll, arguing why it's OK to personally profit on the backs of taxpayers while doing little work, and getting caught in a blatant lie by the reporter writing the story," said Russell. "After this, it would be shameless for these three to ever utter the words 'ethics' and 'reform' in the same sentence again, but to do it today they must be completely oblivious to the firestorm this story has sparked." I wonder how the political bosses in Camden feel today knowing they've invested so much time and money in a bunch of stone cold losers?"
Bodine’s running mates joined in the Bark pile-on, beckoning their opponents in the Assembly race, Dawn Addiego and Scott Rudder, and Bodine’s rival for Bark’s vacated state Senate seat, County Clerk Phil Haines, to do the same.
"For months, our opponents have remained mute on the matter of ethics reform," Riley said. "When we called on them to follow our lead on banning pay-to-play and ending the cycle of cronyism, corruption and complacency that has come to define Burlington County government, they stuck their heads in the sand and refused to stand up for the taxpayers."
"The Republican candidates run and hide every time there is talk of real ethics reform in Burlington County," said Fifis. "Now, when we call on them yet again to join us in denouncing the culture of corruption and insider deals that are driving up our property taxes, they wheel out a disgraced mouthpiece to say voters are not concerned with ethics. Senator Bark has been swimming in a cesspool of corruption with her $330,000 in no-show jobs. Are Haines, Rudder and Addiego going to stand side-by-side with her, or are they going to do the right thing?"

Wow
Talk about the three stooges! It was only a matter of time before Fran was smacked with his own issues, and the salt in the wound desperate Tracy Riley and her running mate Chris Fifis are utterly stupidly standing behind Fran with forced smiles on their faces!! Wow, What an absolute difference compared to the Haines Ticket! Oh and didnt someone tell those three stooges that Bark is not running? Stand side by side?? This is getting funnier and funnier especially when Riley talks about ethics! Where were Riley's ethics when she set her sights on a married man? Or her ethics to the voters of Mt Laurel to leave them after less than three months on council to abandon them after promising to do right by them? Or her ethics on being honest with the voters regarding her family representation of the Duka case? Bodine and Riley - Perrrrrfect together
More Cowbell Please !!
Bark walked right into that...
Bark's comment was borderline absurd, especially considering she was the focus of an investigation for her no-show, taxpayer-wasting jobs at BCIT. Ethics are indeed a concern for state voters.
Thus far -- and this isn't spin -- the 8th District Republicans refuse to sign onto a pay-to-play ban or make ethics a key point of their platform (e.g., platform equals whatever Boss Paulsen tells them). Though Bodine isn't being completely honest when he says it was Boss Paulsen's illegal activities and corruption that drove him away from the BurlCo GOP machine, it is a fact that Paulsen drives the contracts and the candidates.
A pay-to-play ban and substantive ethics reform, as offered by Riley in Mt. Laurel and Fifis in Lumberton (gaining him multiple newspaper endorsements because of his vision), is what BurlCo desperately needs. Unfortunately, it's politics as usual with Haines-Addiego-Rudder, all of whom have had their hands in the Paulsen contracts and who readily have made it so "connected" companies get contracts.
Hey marty
Once again you know NOTHING about this District, and what about Bodine? Please your self serving rants are only entertainment fodder for all!

The personal attacks and stream-of-consciousness posts don't do your side, and your benefactors, Bark-Paulsen-Stears-Addiego-Rudder (thank goodness his father helped find Bark her no-show jobs!)-Haines, any good.
A massive contrast is that of Bodine, who has a strong record on bringing money to his district and environmental preservation, to Haines, who helped passed out contracts to inside companies while he was a freeholder from 1996-99 and, with Addiego, oversaw and approved of the Strategy Group scandal himself. Why can't Haines-Addiego-Rudder mention pay-to-play or ethics reform, and where do they stand on the BurlCo Bridge Commission's widespread corruption and slush funds?
Fifis' question is a poignant one, "Is Boss Paulsen keeping them quiet?"
And I love Fifis' apt comparison in this quote: "“Sending Haines and Addiego to Trenton would be the equivalent to hiring Bonnie and Clyde as bank tellers.” “Like Bonnie and Clyde, Haines and Addiego just can’t be trusted with handling our money.”
Entertainment
If this is a dupe I apologize, but thank you again Martin for the entertainment! Your nonsensical rantings again prove that hatred for the GOP only fuels the fire to get out the vote. I think it is so cute that you are now defending Fran Bodine afer spending so much time slamming him for the better part of what two years? But since he became a democrat, that makes him innocent? Really Martin, I am sure your beloved dem polls show Haines with a 20 pt plus lead over Bodine, that is what is going to get Addiego and Rudder over the hump. Keep it up Martin, the fuel you give us is great!

Martha Bark talking about
Martha Bark talking about ethics is hilarious. Peter Inverso is one of the most respectable politicians in this state, Bark has some brass to say voters have no concern for ethics. It's a good thing she is retiring...and she should just shut up.
Bark and Bodine
Two pees in a pod. It was great to see that the R's dumped both Bark and Bodine earlier this year and are running a brand new slate.
Bark and Bodine were running mates for years. Both had pension boosting government jobs with little to show for it. Both stopped working for the residents and focused on their own personal gain.
Both were dumped.
The only real difference between the two is Bark got the message and agreed not to run (she should have resigned) while her running mate sold himself to the highest bidder. He is stuck sucking off the trough.
Bodine never said a word about his running mate until the day that he was exposed by the Courier Post for his ethical failures.
How brave. Riley and Fifis are either complete idiots for not dumping their running mate for doing what Martha did and worse or they completely comfortable for abusing taxpayers for their personal gain.
Either way, unless they dump him soon, they will go down with him.
Martin
The only one throwing personal attacks in this thread has been you. "GOPTROLL"? If the quote "self serving rant" is a personal attack, you need to seriously lighten up.
Further
As for Fifis' comment that the GOP cannot be trusted with handling our money, maybe if Chris would pay his taxes (a lien on his restaurant of approximately 17k), there would be more tax revenue in the system to spend on our needs - or heaven forbid, return it back to the hardworking taxpayers in the form of tax cuts.
Amazing
It is truly amazing to read the rants on this board. For example, Fifis said he wasn't a partner until Feb 2000. Please explain how he could pay off a lien on a building two years before he became a partner? It is no wonder GOP campaigns are failing in Burlington - you have opp researchers like the oc doing such thorough work.
Honey Fitz
I do my research and do it well. Too bad I cannot say the same for you. Please read the following quote from Chris Fifis' bio on the Burlington County Democrat Organization's website: In 1998, Chris joined the family business and ushered in the second generation of Fifis ownership of Ponzio's. This indicates he was owner the same year they had a lien placed on his families' restaurant for $17,000 in unpaid taxes. Maybe you should keep your mouth shut when you have no clue what you are talking about.
Legislative offices
According to the New Jersey Legislature website, Senator Bark and Assemblymen Bodine and Chadzidakis are still maintaining a common legislative office, despite Assemblyman Bodine's change of party. Is that information still accurate?
Does He Owe Today?
Does Fifis owe anything today? If not OC, shut-up. Did he go in and staighten out the business? If he did, it should be a non-issue. If he still owes money today that is a different story. You folks sure do twist crap? Just like the poor girl who ran for a county office two years ago who never paid property tax. Opps we forgot to say she lived at home and didn't own any property! I hope she wins in court against the slime that the Burlington County GOP has become. Kudos to Bill Haines and Jim Wujick for taking a stand.
Sad...
I pulled in behind Martha Bark at the statehouse one day and with all those jobs she drives a 1998 Olds Intrigue. That thing is definitely a cream puff!
Too bad Bark is right
She is absolutely right about people not caring about corruption. All you have to do is ask U.S. Senator Tom Kean if people care about corruption.
I have every right
I have every right to question Chris Fifis and the Burlington County Democrat Organization about their lack of leadership and failure to pay taxes just like they did to Dawn Addiego. It is called hypocrisy. So, why don't you grow up and stop telling people to shut up.
Incorrect Again
Fifis obtained ownership Feb 2000. Lien was 1998. Addiego owned house in 2007. Addiego failed to timely pay her taxes in 2007. Her own executive director admits she is late by a month or two every now or then paying her taxes. Enough said.
GOPGAL - POLLS
GopGal- Who cares what the polls say on October 2nd. I suspect you probably had Gus Tamburro well ahead of Randy Brown in Evesham, and probably had Pete Emmons well ahead of Dave Patriarca in Pemberton, and perhaps Vince Farias well ahead of George Kotch for Surrogate last year. Whether Haines is ahead or not is irrelevant. This is a low turnout election and it comes down to GOTV. There isn't one individual at Burlington GOP HQ who has the first clue how to organize or run GOTV. Haines could be ahead by 60 points and it would mean absolutely nothing with the incompetence at 223 High Street.
Wow Mason
How do you know what goes on at the HQ????? Interesting However, polls, schmolls the only poll is on election day and that is what counts! Thanks for the chuckle OC as well

Honey
Hey, honey. So Chris is not telling the truth somewhere. On the Burlington County Democrat Organization's website, it clearly states (as I showed you in a previous post above) that he became part of the ownership of Ponzio's in 1998. That is from HIS biography, not made up by me or and GOPer. This is the exact quote: "In 1998, Chris joined the family business and ushered in the second generation of Fifis ownership of Ponzio's." Now, I did not major in math in college, but those four numbers sure do look like 1998 to me and not 2000. The lien was placed on the business the same year he - according to his bio - became an owner and it went unpaid for six months or more. So what is he hiding?
Non-Issue
The back taxes from seven years ago is a non-issue unless it is habitual and he still owes today. Get past your rhetoric and realize one financial hiccup in a businees doesn't make him or anyone irresponsible
It is an issue
It is an issue if you slam another person for the same thing. Duh - it is called hypocrisy. But I guess it is a "do as I say, not as I do" mentality that Democrats live under? And $17k is one large "hiccup" that took half a year to straighten out.
