Matt Doherty, who waged a strong race for the State Assemby in the eleventh district last year, will run for Belmar Councilman in November. Local Democrats picked him to replace Timothy McCorry, who dropped out of the race. The incumbent, John Szeliga, is not seeking re-election. Doherty is married to Maggie Moran, the Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Jon Corzine.

I agree with Mr. Dem's point. And let's not forget Belmar is a very evenly divided town. In 2004, Bush beat Kerry by less than 70 votes (out of over 2700 cast) and in 2005, Corzine and Forrester tied. Having strong ties and a profile in this boro will definately be an asset for an 11th LD candidate.

I think we all use our "connections" in one way or the other, either to help others or to help ourselves. Everyone knows that connections come into play in politics and in every other business there is, whether or not someone wants to admit to it. As a Republican, I must say that I know and have worked with Maggie Moran on different occasions. I like and respect her, despite the fact that we are on opposite sides of the fence politically. This has nothing to do with her husband being his own man. He certainly is, just as much as she is her own woman.

The problem with politics today and this particular candidacy is that it has nothing to do with good governent or good governance.
An opportunity to run for the sake of running so that this individual can make another run for higher office is at the core of why people hate politics.
Statewide big wigs who are in politics for power and cushy patronage perks is bad enough at the county and state level. Do sleepy shore communities like this need to be part of this kind power play?
I'm sure there are many qualified "locals" who truly want to contribute than just build a political resume.
When you treat the electorate like idiots, this kind of maneuvering tends to backfire.

Wow. Sounds like NJDem isnt much of a Dem at all. Matt Doherty is the strongest Democratic candidate to come out of Monmouth County in years. When he ran last year, he said he opposed dual office holding. I believe he will stick to that pledge.
