Two Democratic State Senators from Hudson County, Joseph Doria and Bernard Kenny, will not seek re-election in 2007.
Kenny, the Senate Majority Leader and Hudson County Democratic Chairman, will announce next week that he will step down rather than battle Assemblyman Brian Stack, the Mayor of Union City, in the Democratic primary.
Incumbent Sal Vega, the Mayor of West New York, and Hoboken Councilman Ruben Ramos, will run for Assembly.
There is speculation that Assembyman Louis Manzo will also not be on the HCDO slate.
Doria went to the Senate in 2004, after Glenn Cunningham's death. Sandra Bolden Cunningham, the widow the late Mayor/Senator, is already a candidate for the 31st district Senate seat.
So far, ten State Senators have announced their retirements this year. At least one more, State Sen. Sharpe James, is also expected to leave office.
Doria served in the Assembly from 1979 to 2003, when he lost a Democratic primary, served as Assembly Speaker from 1999 to 1992 and then spent ten years as Minority Leader. He will continue to serve as Mayor of Bayonne, where he was re-elected in 2006.
Kenny was elected to the Legislature in 1987, when he and Bob Menendez won two Republican Assembly seats. He moved up to the Senate after Menendez's election to Congress in 1992.

Senator Kenny
Senator Kenny just told me he has not made any decisions about whether to seek re-election to the Senate. He said your report about him "is not true."
If you're being told
... that the 33rd ticket is settled, you're hearing some wishful thinking. Kenny isn't out yet. And Stack hasn't settled on Vega, or Vega on Stack.
I've also heard the 33rd ticket is not settled...
and that a dark horse might emerge. Plus why would Doria retire considering he has very good odds of holding the seat?
Stack
Isn't Stack under investigation by the U.S. Attorney for funneling state money to his wife, the daycare center she runs and contractors who do work in Union City? Amazing that he'll likely get elected to the state senate.
doria
i'm curious to see what Doria gains by leaving office now w/out a fight. He's far too cunning to walk away w/out a golden parachute of some kind.
Sandy Cunningham
Hudson County goes from having a distinguished and accomplished legislator in Joe Doria to an unqualifed person in Sandy Cunningham. Sad day for Hudson.
