ROBERTS STATEMENT ON SENATE PASSAGE
OF LANDMARK AFFORDABLE HOUSING REFORM
(TRENTON) - Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts, Jr., today hailed the Senate's passage of landmark legislation that would open doors to affordable housing for countless families and end the practice of suburban communities skirting their affordable housing obligations by paying urban centers to build units for low- and moderate-income residents.
The Senate voted 21-16 to send the measure to Governor Corzine's desk. The Governor has previously indicated he would sign the legislation.
Roberts (D-Camden) released the following statement:
"The goal of requiring every town in every corner of our state to honor their responsibility to provide affordable homes for working families is one step closer to reality.
"With today's vote, the Senate added its voice to those that already have repudiated regional contribution agreements and the poverty and segregation they promoted for nearly three decades.
"Senate President Codey and Senator Lesniak should be commended for the work they put into making passage of this legislation possible. I am grateful for their efforts.
"The days of towns being able to ignore their obligation to provide affordable housing are finally nearing their end."
