Edwards raises $100k in N.J.

About 150 people attended a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards in Colts Neck on Monday, raising over $100,000 for the campaign. Former Governor Richard Codey introduced Edwards at a private meeting with Democratic leaders organized by Assemblyman Michael Panter. Nine Democratic County Chairmen attended the session: Ronald Ruff (Atlantic), Rick Perr (Burlington), Jim Beach (Camden), Louis Magazzu (Cumberland), David DelVecchio (Hunterdon), Victor Scudiery (Monmouth), Lewis Candura (Morris), Wyatt Earp (Ocean), and John Currie (Passaic) -- and Middlesex County Vice Chairwoman Helen Gottlieb. Edwards spoke and took questions for about 45 minutes, and organizers said that the Edwards campaign did not ask for endorsements.

Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes, who will be supporting Hillary Clinton, was among the Democrats at the private meeting with Edwards.

Edwards is quietly making some in-roads in N.J., though Clinton does currently have a stronger organizational apparatus. I hope that the chairmen and legislators who met with Edwards yesterday get behind his campaign, as his cause is a worthy one, and he would represent N.J. views well as our president. NJN News mentioned Edwards' visit, the first by any presidential candidate this year, on their program last night.

That John Edwars could only rasie $100k in New Jersey, the ATM machine for all national candidates, is a sign that even with the full-tilt support of the Ted and Nina Wells family, Edwards isn't getting any traction except among the tractor-pullers in Iowa.

The stars are aligning for the emergence of a Gore candidacy. Gore will overcome the early backing of Reed Gusciora and become the next Democratic nominee.

Without the chairmen from Hudson, Essex, Camden, Union, and Bergen there...I can't get too excited.

I'm not surprised that this many chairs turned up just to hear him talk. I think that's smart. If they all start endorsing Edwards, I'll be very surprised.

$100k at an event this early, with not much work on the ground yet isn't too bad either, I don't think.

Pander, Ruffy & Maggot, what a line up. By the way, Codey was not elected by the people therefore he is not a past governor. The term is "acting". The press seems to want to gloss over that little fact much like the bogus portrait that hangs in Trenton. Bottom line, Edwards coundn't win North Carolina. He has no chance!

RoadWarrior: the "acting" title was removed from Codey's title. It was also removed from the title of DiFrancesco.

Therefore, he was a past Governor.

I don't think when Gerald Ford left office that people called him "former acting President" Ford.

How 'bout a little respect?
