Embracing the huddled masses

It was the perfect setting for an immigration related press conference: an old train terminal in Jersey City’s Liberty State Park, within view of the Statue of Liberty, where countless immigrants poured off ferries from nearby Ellis Island to board trains for points West.

It was here that Gov. Jon Corzine signed an executive order creating a new blue ribbon panel on immigration during a well-choreographed event. But there was a less jubilant undertone as well -- it was clear that the Governor did not want the tension that characterized the recent Morristown anti-immigration rally to replicate across the state.

The panel will have 27 members – two state legislators chosen from the black and Hispanic caucus, seven commissioners from state agencies, and 18 members appointed by the Governor. It will be led by Public Advocate Ron Chen for a period of 15 months, with a mission to recommend how to integrate the state’s immigrant population – both legal and illegal – in matters ranging from civil rights, naturalization, healthcare, employment, job training, housing, education and language.

Diana Mejia, a union organizer and co-founder of Wind of the Spirit, an immigrant advocacy group, said she was optimistic about the panel, and hopes they’ll address issues like driver’s licenses and civil rights for illegal immigrants.

“I think that it’s a good start – we look forward to what’s going to come out of this. And I think it was wonderful that they mentioned Morristown, because of all the crises that are happening there right now,” said Mejia, who was a counter-protestor at the Morristown rally.

The ceremony was everything you’d expect from a fairly large political production. It was well organized and well attended, attracting not only the Governor but Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy, U.S. Reps. Donald Payne and Albio Sires, Hudson County Executive Tom Degise, and Chen. Even Chief Justice Stuart Rabner’s teenage daughter was on hand to sing “America the Beautiful” in between studying an SAT preparatory book.

And while nobody mentioned the name of Morristown Mayor Donald Cresitello in a speech, the disapproval of his approach to illegal immigration – using section 287(g) of the Immigration and Naturalization act to deputize local police officers as immigration agents -- was apparent.

“We have not always reached out and been consistent in how we integrate,” said Corzine, who called the violent outbreak at the Morristown rally “pushback” against the type of attitude he hopes to foster. “We have to look out for the civil rights and human rights of each and every human being,” he added.

Chen, the son of Chinese immigrants, was more blunt in his criticism of Cresitello’s policies. He was present for the Morristown rally.

“The fear that was present on both sides was palpable and distributing,” said Chen, who added that he thought the mayor’s idea to deputize local police officers as immigration agents was responsible for “spurring resentment and causing division.”

Reached for comment, Cresitello said that the idea of waiting 15 months to hear recommendations sounded absurd. If the state and federal governments enforced the existing laws, he said, there would be no need for an advisory panel.

“I don’t want to wait 15 months for some blue ribbon panel to come back and tell us what needs to be done today,” said Cresitello. “What needs to be done today is to enforce those few laws.”

As for the Morristown rally, Cresitello said, the violence was caused by protestors on the other side of the issue. He went on to call Chen a “hatchet man” for Corzine.

“As the public advocate, he should be helping the Morristown residents deal with the problem of illegal immigration and make sure that his boss the governor would enforce existing labor law,” said Cresitello.

Perhaps the politician least critical of Cresitello was Mayor Healy.

“I’m not about to criticize a colleague I know and respect,” said Healy. “Let’s just say we have diverse views on diversity.”

Selfish Opportunists

The only reason any of these hacks want amnesty for illegal aliens (not immigrants) is because once they become citizens, they will overwhelmingly vote Democrat.

These bozos care nothing about the welfare of these people. They only care about gaining more power and lining their own pockets with more money.

I wish I could say that the Republicans record on immigration reform and border security were better but sadly, this isn't the case.

The Federal Governments Revolution!

What the panel should be looking into is the Federal Governments Revolution in governing. They should look into the Treason involved in the recent illegal passing of the agriculture bill that gives social services to illegal aliens. Should we also be subsidizing their illegal labor? They should look into the fraud involved in the comprehensive immigration bills of the past that have only had the amnesty and gravy parts doled out to the illegal invaders while they never do get around to the enforcement parts. If this happened in the private sector they would have been charged with fraud long ago! Or the tax money going to race groups like La Raza. Or the Federal Governments involvement in the conspiracy to create sanctuary cities around the United States. As for these New Jersey Polls people are talking about. I’m sure the people of New Jersey don’t need a panel to expose the fraudulent claims of those. If you want maybe a head count out in the streets would be a better way to get a recount!

is this a joke ???

a blue ribbon panel of folks that cant recite the oath of citizenship. I have a suggestion for Corzine and Wildes put a legal immigrant on the panel. Maybe that Freeholder candidate from Bergen. This is just a shameless effort to pander to the illegal lobby and expand the base of socialism in NJ

Please the facts only no more lies!

Another doctored piece of news. Why don't we have to report the facts anymore. Shame on you Matt. First the facts Morristown was not anti-immigration rally Jon. We have immigration laws in effect today we don't want them changed we expect them enforced. You did put your hand on the Bible, or in NJ they use Mad Magazine, to swear to uphold the laws. I think the biggest mix-up is that the illegals are considered immigrants by those looking to normalize the situation & condone their law breaking. So since illegals are not immigrants the rally was anti-illegal immigration. Diana Mejia is one of our problems. Let her go help people in their own countries attain civil rights. She would help those people help to make that country a better place so people wouldn't want to leave. But instead she chooses to undermine our laws to aid special people who don't have to obey our laws. Again another discussion another smokescreen Build the fence. Stop the flow of people looking to break our laws from entering this country illegally. Let them come legally. What is the problem with that? We are going to have a blue ribbon panel. That's a joke. We can't figure out how to lower property taxes & help legal citizens. Yet we are going to take illegal immigration to help illegals get the same benefits as citizens. My favorite is Jersey City Mayor Jeremiah Healy he had the legal Artist citizens evicted from 111 First Street. Which he got 1 million above the table from the developer. Never did find out how much below the table? I hope none of illegals are Artists

Illegal is Illegal, even in NJ

What don't you get about this issue of ILLEGAL aliens sucking dry the resources of our community and hospitals. When does enough is enough become a reality in OUR COUNTRY. The mere fact that the illegal alien crowd DEMANDS AMNESTY makes my blood boil. The fact that NJ is going to break our nations laws and create a sanctuary state is the end of the rope. Isn't the Public Advocate suppose to work for the people? How does the Governor have the adacity to appoint our public servant to this illegal operation? Illegal is illegal and that is what we need to come around to. Stop the greedy employers, dead in their tracks and we stop the inflow of illegal aliens. Come on NJ, lead not follow!

Illegal is Illegal, even in NJ

"Isn't the Public Advocate suppose to work for the people?"

From his Bio...........

"Since 1990, Ron has been an active member of the American "Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He first served as a Trustee on the New Jersey board and then was elected to ACLU’s national board."

That should answer your question..........

Another one of Jonnies liberal socialist P_ _ '_ sorry but that’s what they stand for anything goes including illegal immigrants.

Corzine's Blue Ribbon Panel

Are you kidding??????

I am a former US Marine. Paid every bit of state tax. worked legally. Been denied twice by the New Jersey State Department of Higher Education for school loans, to further my education.

Been denied homestead rebates.

Now a commitee to see how we can make illegal aliens happier.

The only minority in this state is the working white straight male.

I don't get the job, I keep looking.

The last parade or march I was in consisted of camouflage and I was holding a M16-A2.
