Endorsements

Two daily newspapers covering New Jersey endorsed candidates for Governor this weekend: the New York Times is backing Democrat Jon Corzine, while the Courier-Post, a Gannett newspaper out of Camden County, supports Republican Doug Forrester. In 2000, the New York Times endorsed Bob Franks over Corzine in the U.S. Senate race.

The Courier Post's "endorsement" is one of the most forced, illogical, half-hearted endorsements I've ever read.

NYT's "endorsement" of Corzine: "Mr. Corzine, who has outspent his opponent to date, has insisted that his riches offer independence from special interests. So far, the money seems to have been more useful in buying the support of local power brokers than in empowering him to stand up to them."

Uh, yeah, in case you haven't noticed, nobody is getting excited choosing between the two uncharismatic supermillionaires with undesirable and expensive property tax plans and unfortunate connections to political bosses.

We're kinda being forced here to choose between repeating the mistakes of the Whitman administration (meaning spiraling debt and ethical gaffes) or repeating the mistakes of the McGreevey administration (meaning spiraling debt and ethical gaffes).

I like the fact that the newspapers are FINALLY pointing out, that this man (Forrester) is running his FAMILY against John Corzine.

It follows, that the endorsements will inevitably go to: who will be the nicest First Lady? (controls what, 5% of the electorate?) Who has the nicest kids? (Christie used them to go over the top. They turned out to be brats that got in trouble in New Hope.)

I almost feel, like the Governor of New Jersey is some kind of cheerleader role, where it goes to who has the best schtick. While the REST of the state grapples with decades-old problems that never get fixed.

Why do these things always have to turn into beauty shows, or contests that look too much like Student Council President than an actual serious office?

Because that's what voters respond to.
